Estate Gardener for this Major Public Garden of twenty four gardens forty five minutes north of Philadelphia in the bucolic hills of Bucks County, Hortulus Farm Nursery and Gardens. Hortulus is one of two "Affiliate" gardens of the Garden Conservancy along with Jack Lenor Larsen's Longhouse Reserve and is a member of Greater Gardens of Philadelphia. The recently published book by Timber press "CHASING EDEN" is the story of Hortulus as written by the owners with photographs by Rob Cardillo. We are looking for a full time, winter included with greenhouse work, gardener to help with the care and maintenance of the perennial borders, vegetable and cutting gardens, and various of the other gardens. Appropriately qualified candidates must be exceptionally motivated by the opportunity to actively influence the evolution and continuous enhancement of this creative green space on an eighteenth century farmstead, the primary purpose of which is the pursuit of an island of beauty and tranquility. Education for the visiting public of the plant material that flourishes here is also key.
Essential traits for this candidate are a hands-on love of the outdoors and gardens, fitness for demanding physical work, unequivocal reliability, infectious enthusiasm, and an inquisitive mind with the drive to learn and hone one's knowledge and creativity. Daily care of the perennial borders, vegetable, herb and various other gardens including planting, deadheading, pruning, propagating, weeding and mulching. Recognizing and reporting any signs of pest, disease or cultural problems. Ability to work independently and be a self-starter.
Horticultural education or demonstrated professional horticultural/gardening experience. Strong plant identification skills and knowledge of cultural requirements. Knowledge and experience of horticultural techniques. Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Experience using hand tools such as shovels, pruning shears, loppers, etc. All mowing is done by others. Hortulus Farm is a small organization - a positive attitude and good work ethic is essential.
