The Science & Conservation: Research department at Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) seeks a Seedbank Manager to lead day-to-day operations in the seedbank at Holden Forests & Gardens under a principal investigator. The seedbank is a new resource at the Arboretum that will be used to foster increased restoration throughout the region by making restoration seeds available to regional partners as well as the Holden Forests & Gardens community. The seedbank manager will be responsible for tracking incoming and outgoing seed, cleaning seed, and maintaining the seedbank facility. The seedbank manager will also be responsible for building regional collaborations and developing a business plan for the facility. This position is based out of the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, OH in the Long Science Center. Supports Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission, vision, values, and core commitment
Tracks incoming and outgoing seed using a digital application
Cleans and stores seed
Tests seed viability
Maintains a clean and functional seedbank facility
Builds partnerships throughout the region to foster restoration work
Develops a business plan for the seedbank to guide partnerships and future initiatives
Gauges and tracks restoration impacts throughout the region
Assists and mentors interns, students, grant-funded employees and volunteers
Contributes to internal and external publications for Holden Forests & Gardens, such as writing and taking photos for the organization’s blog
Takes part in educational activities such as leading tours of the seedbank and restoration areas
Collaborates with various cross-departmental initiatives at Holden Forests & Gardens
Other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation:
Frequent work outdoors under a wide range of weather conditions
Ability to transport oneself on and off trail over a variety of terrain that may be wet, slippery, uneven, rocky
Demonstrated passion for people and nature
A bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, forestry, or related field, required
Experience with data management practices and data analysis, required
Knowledge of seed cleaning techniques and storage practices, or willingness to learn
Proficient use of Microsoft 365 products, specifically Teams, Outlook (email and calendar), Word, Excel, SharePoint, and OneDrive
Independently conduct and troubleshoot projects
Good understanding of scientific writing and protocol creation
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Working independently as well as on a team
A valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
