Job Description 

Holden Forests & Gardens is one of Northeast Ohio’s largest and most important cultural and environmental institutions. It comprises two campuses, the urban Cleveland Botanical Garden campus in Cleveland’s University Circle and the rural Holden Arboretum campus in Kirtland and is the 12th largest public garden in the US.

We are seeking a Director of Exhibits and Experiences to join our team. The Director of Exhibits and Experiences (DE) is responsible for providing innovative leadership and excellence in the development and delivery of Holden Forests & Gardens' (HF&G) guest experience programs at its two campuses: the Holden Arboretum located in Kirtland, OH, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden located in Cleveland, OH. The DE oversees and manages multiple aspects of guest experience projects from concept through execution including design, construction, installation, procurement, budgeting, and risk management. The DE supervises HF&G's Exhibits and Experiences (E&E) staff and volunteers, and identifies, sources, and oversees the work of external contractors in a wide variety of disciplines. The DE reports directly to the Chief of Education and Guest Experience.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
 Organizes and administers the overall operation of the Exhibits and Experiences Team and oversee the EE staff and volunteers.
 Develops and refines multi-year schedule of special exhibits, experiences, and related projects coordinated across both campuses.
 Collaborates with other managers and experts within HF&G's Education, Interpretation, Horticulture, Research, and Guest Services areas to bring the HF&G mission and vision to life through best-in-class guest experiences.
 Coordinates with External Affairs team to raise public awareness and garner support for the E&E programs. Activities may include stakeholder presentations, proposal writing/support, and media interviews.
 Develops and document all policies and procedures relevant to all EE operations.
 Develops and maintain budgets and budgetary goals.
 Develops, implement, and practice tools to mitigate risk throughout project life-cycles.
 Ensures budget responsibility and performance targets are met and tracked via the development and implementation of a broad system of team and program performance metrics, reporting products, and tracking systems.
 Assembles, analyzes, prepares, and presents reports and/or relevant data to the CEGE, other members of the Leadership Team, other management staff, and board.
 Oversees / coordinates the work of vendors / contractors in fields including exhibition and experiential design, building trades, specialty trades, graphic and interactive media production, AV hardware integration, event services, food service, and live entertainment.
 Delivers projects on time and on budget through effective project management.
 Supports development, implementation, maintenance, and repairs of permanent exhibit and interpretive elements
 Advocates internally and externally on behalf of new ideas for expanding public engagement with HF&G through dynamic exhibitions and experiences.
 Sets priorities and handles a large variety of complex tasks and in a fast-paced, dual-campus environment.
 Builds relationships with E&E leads and peers at other local, regional, and national public gardens, arts, and cultural organizations. Demonstrates field-leadership.
 Other duties as assigned.

 Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study which may include architecture, design, visual arts, or nonprofit administration. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable for other fields of study.
 A minimum of 5 years field experience in exhibitions, experiential design, productions, special event management, or related field. Prior arts and cultural organization management is preferred.
 High level of demonstrated design talent and/or the ability to recognize and facilitate great design. Ability to oversee the work of multidisciplinary design professionals and ensure best-in-class results. Eager to experiment with new models for the guest experience.
 Ability to work with integrated cultural management database systems as an end user; specifically, through data entry, data retrieval, and data analysis. Prior experience with Blackbaud Altru is preferred.
 Ability to read, comprehend, and discuss / comment upon 2D and 3D design and construction documentation in electronic and paper format is essential.
 Project management experience is required including knowledge of PMI best practices and PMBOK. CAPM or PMP certification preferred.
 Commitment to sustainable operations and integrating sustainability themes and practices into exhibits, experiences, and team ethos.
 A passion for science, nature and/or conservation.

 Knowledge of weights, measures, scales, and common terminology used in the design and construction industry.
 Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat DC Professional and/or Bluebeam Revu.

 The schedule involves a 5-day work week which will include frequent weekend work. The schedule will also require a combination of early morning and late evening hours as well as some holidays.
 Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record required to be covered on Holden Forests & Garden’s vehicle insurance policy
 Must pass a credit, criminal background and substance test

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel and crouch; use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, and controls, reach with hands and arms, and have the ability to talk and hear. The employee must have the ability to exert 5 to 25 pounds of force occasionally.

Additionally, qualified candidates must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and percentages; ability to read and comprehend documents and write reports and business correspondences; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, guests, and the general public; ability to interact with the public and team members in a positive manner; ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form.

This position requires spending a significant amount of time outside in all seasons & weather conditions.
