Job Description 

The Development Department at Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) seeks a Development Communication Specialist to serve as the department’s primary writer and storyteller, creating donor-facing communication materials, including grants and proposals, that convey the impact of philanthropy. The Development Communication Specialist works closely with the Development and Public Relations & Marketing departments to create compelling messages tailored to specific audiences, events, and channels. The Development Communication Specialist will communicate effectively in writing and be able to transition between different writing styles. This position is time-limited to the duration of the current capital campaign which is estimated to last for five years. This position is based out of the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland, OH with occasional travel to the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, OH. Hybrid office setting
Limited time position, approximately 5 years

Duties & Responsibilities 

Supports Holden Forests & Gardens’ mission, vision, values, and core commitment
Helps the Development department in writing, editing, and proof-reading donor-facing communication materials, including solicitations, stewardship materials, event invitations, donor newsletters, impact reports, website content, and other materials as necessary
Leads the development, writing, and editing of assigned grant proposals and reports, including for individuals, foundations, corporations, and government
Coordinates with relevant staff in order to solicit timely and appropriate input and review of proposals
Partners with the Public Relations & Marketing department to create cohesive messaging for all donor constituencies, refreshing key messages on a seasonal basis
Partners with the Public Relations & Marketing department to craft talking points, scripts, and remarks for leadership, key staff, and campaign volunteers to effectively convey essential organizational messages to donors and other key stakeholders
Project manages donor communications and maintains a comprehensive queue and reference library of proposals, reports, donor stories, other donor communications, and commonly used materials and budgets
Serves as departmental liaison to key organization-wide communications-related initiatives and external partnerships
Help promote a culture of philanthropy at Holden Forests & Gardens
Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience 

Qualifications and Skills:
Demonstrated passion for people and nature
Bachelor’s Degree in Media & Communication, Journalism, English, Creative Writing, or other related Liberal Arts field
At least 2 years’ experience in grant writing or professional communications
Experience working in a non-profit organization, preferred
Physical Requirements:
