Performs technical horticulture by designing, installing and maintaining flowers,
containers, and planting beds containing trees, shrubs and perennials.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Gardens on Spring Creek is the community
botanic garden of Fort Collins. It is a public-private partnership between the City of Fort
Collins and the Friends of the Gardens on Spring Creek. The mission of The Gardens is
to enrich the lives of people and foster environmental stewardship through horticulture.
The facility includes a Visitor’s Center and 12 acres of gardens. A detailed description of

There are 2 positions available. One is full time at the Gardens on Spring Creek. The
second position is ½ time at the Gardens on Spring Creek and ½ time with the City of
Fort Collins Parks Department managing specialty crops at Twin Silo Park and helping
with the Community Garden Outreach Program.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and
correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Colorado driver’s license required.
Ability to obtain DOT certification.
Colorado Pesticide Applicator’s license required or ability to obtain within 6 months.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties and
responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not

Perform various gardening tasks including but not limited to: seeding,
transplanting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, deadheading, and leaf-
Ensure garden and public areas of all sorts are kept neat and presentable to
Utilizes Integrated Pest Management approach and applies pesticide as
Operates equipment necessary for maintenance of gardens and lawns such as
rototiller, and leaf blower, mower, string trimmer and an array of garden hand
Maintains records regarding plant accessions, performance and pest control
Designs and maintains annual and perennial beds.
Irrigation system management.
Manage volunteer groups and community partnerships.
Provides horticultural information to public.
Availability to assist with special events, rentals and special projects as required.
Perform snow removal.
For Twin Silo Park: food crop management including fruit trees, hops,
hydroponic crops and other edible crops.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Experience with garden design (beds and containers) and indoor plant maintenance.
Ability to identify tree, shrub, and plant species.
Ability to attain proficiency in operating all other equipment necessary to perform job
Irrigation system maintenance and repair skills.
Basic landscaping equipment maintenance and repair
Data entry and plant data base experience.
Basic math skills.
Proficient in use of a computer such as e-mail, word processing and database
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Associates or Bachelors Degree in horticulture or related field; three to four years related
experience and/or training, or combination of education and experience.
