The new ED will guide the transformation of the organization to become an even stronger regional destination, a world-class environmental education leader, and a top-ranked center for discovery, learning, wellness, and science. The Environmental Learning Center’s is an environmental education and nature center located in the Vero Beach community and situated on Wabasso Island. Its mission is to educate, inspire and empower all people to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being.
The Executive Director of the Environmental Learning Center is responsible for the overall strategic and operational leadership of the organization. The ED will exhibit a high level of collaboration, team building and influencing skills to achieve outstanding performance throughout the organization. Through a commitment for the Center’s environmental and educational mission, growing revenue – both earned and contributed – and controlling expenses will be critical as the ED provides leadership across the organization and inspires her or his staff to excellence in all areas.
The ED will need to lead a team of staff and volunteers, work with a committed board and balance internal management responsibilities with external relations and fundraising abilities to realize the long-term vision of the Center. The new ED will lead bringing this a new comprehensive master plan that sets a bold 10-year vision for the campus to reality including the development of strategic programs and a funding strategy.
The ED leads, plans, and monitors all activities of the Center as per the policies prescribed by the Board of Directors. The ED reports directly to the Board and is the primary spokesperson for the Center. He/she, working with the Board, will develop the vision for the Center and create and execute strategies for implementation. He or she provides the Board with strategic and actionable recommendations on issues and opportunities confronting the Center. The ED is responsible for the day-to-day management of Center operations.
The ED manages the Center’s resources, both personnel and fiscal, including attracting, retaining, developing and evaluating professional staff and volunteers. The ED sets the tone for the culture of the Center, ensuring a high-performing, collaborative and rewarding workplace—a workplace of choice for the region.
• Experience in dealing with the media and an understanding of crisis communications;
• History developing or overseeing public and education programs;
• Knowledge of appropriate educational standards and understanding of nature center or botanical collection design.
• Bachelor’s degree is required, ideally with a degree in a field related to the position. An advanced degree is preferred.
