Connecticut College is conducting a regional search for a Grounds Supervisor to oversee and manage the 115 acre historical campus landscape. The Ground Supervisor will provide leadership, management and supervision to the Grounds Services team that is tasked with performing horticultural, waste management, and mechanical maintenance duties. The successful candidate will establish a high standard of performance, ensured by training, development, and evaluation of staff; utilize TMA to develop cycle maintenance programs for the assets of the campus, and perform routine administrative and personnel duties.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
The Grounds Supervisor will develop departmental goals in line with the College's strategic vision, particularly with regard to sustainability and ecologically responsible practices. This person will provide and coordinate training to Grounds employees, enabling them to perform their duties in a safe, efficient, and professional manner; represent Grounds Services at weekly staff meetings and at the Arboretum Collections Committee; coordinate with Arboretum Director and other Facilities Management supervisors and ensure all work processes comply with Federal, State, Local, and College regulations, policies and procedures. The Grounds Supervisor will plan routine horticulture, turf management and arboriculture activities to ensure that College grounds are maintained to a high level of professional care; adjust schedule based on the College events calendar to tend to high-visibility areas; evaluate and prioritize work orders; oversee trash and recycling program; manage athletic fields and oversee College motor pool. The Grounds Supervisor will schedule routine and extensive horticulture, arboriculture and turf management projects to be carried out on a timely basis; management of invasive species, mowing and watering program, tree care management, maintaining flower beds, leaf removal, and snow removal. The Grounds Supervisor will regularly consult with Arboretum staff and manage plant collections to botanical garden standard; ensure compliance with landscape management plan; supervise and assist with pesticide application and develop/implement an integrated pest management plan. Additional responsibilities include assessing roads, walkways and hardscapes; recommends and overs repair projects; recommends replacement of equipment when necessary; evaluate new equipment; recommend purchases of new equipment. The Grounds Supervisor will identify, plan and advocate for projects that preserve or enhance the Connecticut College campus. Other duties as assigned or as necessary.
Bachelor's degree in horticulture, landscape management, nursery management or related field and 3-5 years of progressively responsible grounds maintenance experience, required. Professional Accreditation such as CT DEEP or ISA Certified Arborist, NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professional, or similar credentials; Horticultural and land management experience working in botanic gardens and arboreta, preferred. Must have knowledge of woody and herbaceous landscape plants and methods of pests and disease management. Current pesticide applicator's license and Pesticide Supervisory Certification License or have the ability to obtain within six months of start of employment. Strong written and verbal communication skills; detail oriented; well-organized, ability to work under pressure; ability to interact well with a variety of people from all levels of the college and community. Knowledge of power tools and equipment, supplies, pesticides and chemicals. Must possess high integrity to handle confidential information. Valid driver's license, required.
