Job Description 

The ideal candidate will be comfortable and successful working independently at a remote facility. They will be skilled in fine gardening techniques with a high level of attention to detail and horticultural practice in growing and caring for plants as well as diagnosing plant health issues. Excellent customer service skills are essential to perform the outreach and partnership tasks in this position. Organization and management of large amounts of data on the collection and ability to use plant collections software for documentation and sharing of information is important. An individual who is independent and self-motivated, who can manage the facility, plan and program maintenance, and outreach activities is essential to success.

Duties & Responsibilities 

This position will be responsible for:
1. Maintaining, growing, and documenting the horticultural collection at the Arboretum. The Arboretum was awarded National CollectionsTM accreditation for the genus Primula with over 200 accessions.
2. Maintaining the Arboretum facility for public use including care for garden beds, trees, fencing, parking lot, pathways, and trails. This includes design and small project installation for new beds, collections and public use areas. Minor maintenance of the manager’s residence is also necessary.
3. Preparing and monitoring the budget for the facility and programs including CBJ funding, grant writing and fundraising in collaboration with the Jensen-Olson Arboretum Advisory Board and Friends of the Jensen-Olson Arboretum.
4. Hiring and supervising groundskeeper personnel.
5. Facilitating daily visitation and interpretation of the facility to the public by planning, creating and executing public outreach programs, both written and spoken, for education and partnership building. Working with community groups to collaborate on projects to educate on history, the natural environment and the collections.
6. Preparing quarterly and annual written reports for community stakeholders.

Education and Experience 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Botany, Landscape Architecture, or closely related field
AND
Experience: Two (2) years of experience working at a public garden, natural area managed for public visitation, or other similar facility with public use and managing horticultural or plant-based exhibits.

OR

Education: Associate’s Degree in Horticulture, Botany, Landscape Architecture, or closely related field
AND
Experience: Four (4) years of experience working at a public garden, natural area managed for public visitation, or other similar facility with public use and managing horticultural or plant-based exhibits.

Substitution: Additional professional gardening experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

License: Valid Alaska Driver’s License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
