Horticulture Internship
Summer 2020

With over 12 acres of gardens plus extensive meadows and woodland trails, Chevy Chase Club offers members and their guests’ relief from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The gardens reflect an estate design philosophy that both respects the Club’s history and fosters interest for generations to come.

The Horticulture team strives to consistently exceed the expectations of members and guests. They accomplish this by balancing creativity and innovation with high standards of horticulture, responsible environmental stewardship, and efficient use of resources.

Horticulture interns work alongside staff to complete various tasks that enhance and maintain the landscape and gardens. The areas of emphasis include an herb and vegetable garden, rose garden, native woodland gardens, herbaceous perennial borders, two acres of turf and an extensive collection of trees, shrubs, annuals and tropical plants.

What you will learn
• Plant identification
• Proper horticulture techniques (planting, staking, pruning, fertilization, weed control)
• Integrated pest management
• Record keeping as it pertains to plant collections
• Water conservation and management of the irrigation system
• Propagation of herbaceous plants
• Financial management as it pertains to a horticulture operation
• Activities and approaches for engaging members in the gardens (summer camp programs, garden tours, edibles for the kitchen, etc.)
• One project that will be determined jointly by the horticulture manager and the student

Duties & Responsibilities 

• This is a paid internship for the months of May to August (exact dates are flexible depending on the university calendar).
• The intern is responsible for completing one independent project based on the specific needs of the Club and the interest and expertise of the intern.
• Hours are from 6:30am to 3:00pm Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime, weekend and holiday work.

Education and Experience 

Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master’s degree program, or have recently graduated.
Applicants need to have either completed course work or have acquired practical experience in horticulture or a related field.
