Position Summary: Executive Director
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the organization’s staff and volunteer personnel as well as all programs and projects in support of the mission, ensuring that the organization’s operations, its programs and projects, are run in a legal, ethical, and financially sustainable manner.

About the Charleston Parks Conservancy
Founded in 2007, the Charleston Parks Conservancy unites local resources, leverages support and organizes volunteers to be stewards of Charleston's urban parks.

Efforts to create, expand, sustain, and reinvigorate Charleston's urban parks require a collaborative approach. To accomplish our goal of improving and preserving public parks, we foster partnerships throughout the Charleston area. With these resources, expert staff, and a passionate corps of volunteers and supporters, the Park Angels, work side-by-side to rejuvenate parks and create opportunities for community engagement through park programs.

By rallying support and catalyzing action, the Charleston Parks Conservancy cultivates stunning city parks. High quality parks ensure that Charleston will be a wondrous, welcoming and active place now, and for future generations.

We think of what the Conservancy does in three categories: we make parks beautiful, we keep parks beautiful, and we make parks fun and active. Like other parks conservancies nationwide, we have invested in park improvements (master planning and renovation projects), care and maintenance, and programming. We currently work in 25 parks--from small spaces like Logan Street Triangle to iconic parks like Colonial Lake.

Key Areas of Responsibility
Organizational and Strategic Leadership
-Create a 3-5 year strategic overview that allows staff, volunteers, and board members to understand the future of the organization, its programs, and key factors for success.
-Communicates vision with stakeholders, staff, and volunteers and provides leadership to ensure the vision is achieved.
-Manage with an authentic leadership style, preferably born of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
-Demonstrate a proven record of considerable success working through a network of relationships and strategic partners to achieve a specific goal.
-Set vision, build credibility, and take calculated risks in implementing strategies

Fundraising and Financial Oversight
-Leverage personal contacts and relationships to identify potential donors or partners.
-Manage and promote all fundraising development initiatives. Diversify and increase funding sources.
-Maintain responsibility for the financial integrity and fiscal management of the Conservancy.
-Ensure safeguards are in place to audit, measure, and verify business and financial performance and practices.
-Develop annual budgets and ensure all organizational divisions operate within the approved budgets.
-Submit timely financial statements which accurately reflect the financial condition and performance of the organization.
-Provide maximum resource utilization and maintain the organization in a positive financial position.

Board Stewardship
-Work directly with the board of directors to develop and cultivate relationships.
-Assist board members with recruitment, development, and orientation of new members.
-Work with the Board Chair to establish accountability by setting defined responsibilities and expectations for all board members.
-Prioritize intentional interactions with individual board members to build relationships, gather honest feedback, gain support, and promote board stability.
-Provide written information, reports, and other required materials in a timely manner.

Public Relations and Outreach
-Oversee and approve public relations materials
-Build and maintain relationships with media
-Maintain and demonstrate substantive knowledge of the organization’s program, client base and stakeholders
-Act as a chief spokesperson for the Conservancy, responsible for public relations, marketing, and communications.
-Supervise marketing and communication strategies to maximize awareness and image of the Conservancy among identified target audiences and the community at large.

Talent and Team Development
-Hire, motivate, develop, and retain competent qualified staff with a commitment to high-quality programs, problem solving, and collaboration.
-Establish and support organizational policies, comprehensive processes, paperwork systems, and up-to-date technology systems.
-Ensure that team members follow structured processes that allow for quality completion in a timely and systematic manner.
-Empower and develop teams with diverse skills sets to competitively strive for improved operational solutions and sustainable growth.
-Diligently monitor organizational goals and hold each team member accountable for reasonable growth and change.
-Cultivate buy-in, commitment, and teamwork through alignment, accountability, and rewarding team accomplishments.
-Demonstrate an ability to manage conflict, build consensus, and facilitate problem-solving and collaboration among various parties.

Investment Management
-Serves on the board Investment Committee to manage the board designated reserve which includes a sizable investment portfolio.
-Manage Conservancy Financial Advisors to ensure investment opportunities according to the Investment Policy Statement.

-Excellence in organizational management including the ability to manage staff and develop teams, set and achieve strategic objectives and manage a budget.
-Track record of effectively leading a non-profit; ability to point to specific examples of having developed and operationalized strategies to the next stage of growth
-Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
-Past success working with a board of directors and the ability to cultivate relationship
-Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
-Strong ability to organize, prioritize, and make decisions
-Creativity to provide alternative, innovative programming and improvements
-Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate effectively with persuasion and passion about the organization and its mission

Education and Experience 

Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree desirable
Ten years of senior management experience and the ability to demonstrate success in leadership roles
Prior successful leadership of a non-profit preferred
