Job Description 

The Day Butterfly Center Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the operations at the Day Butterfly Center which consists of a 7300 square foot live tropical butterfly display with tropical plantings, a butterfly and plant production greenhouse complex, a gift shop, and the associated support facilities. He/she is also responsible for working with other Callaway Resort & Gardens leaders to ensure excellent guest service company-wide; and he/she is responsible for representing Callaway Resort & Gardens in the global community of butterfly exhibitors and other mission partners to maintain the Day Butterfly Center's international reputation of excellence.

Education & Experience:

A bachelor's degree in entomology, environmental education, or a related field is required.
Supervisory experience is required.
Formal training in public speaking, teaching, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience with maintaining live insect colonies is strongly preferred.
Experience with and knowledge of tropical plants and butterfly-related plants is strongly preferred.
Experience with and knowledge of animals, especially insects, is preferred.
Experience with and knowledge of Integrated Pest Management is preferred.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must complete WPS training within 5 days of hire or have a current GA commercial pesticide license.
Must be computer literate; proficient in or able to learn Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, e-mail programs, and purchasing programs.

Physical Requirements:

Long hours sometimes required.
Potentially hard physical labor, occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects.
Ability to stand, squat, and/or kneel for long periods of time.
Ability to work in high temperatures and high humidity on a regular basis.
Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
Ability to safely operate small tools and lawn and gardening equipment.
Ability to operate heavy equipment.
Ability to work on ladders, lifts, and other aerial equipment.
Be able to comfortably handle a wide variety of animals including snakes, spiders, insects, amphibians, etc on a regular basis.

Critical Thinking Skills:

Be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately.
Be able to work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests.
Be able to identify potential guest issues and then develop methodologies to prevent or limit the impact of those guest issues during the course of guest visits.
Be able to assimilate complex information and data from various sources and consider, adjust, or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need.
Be able to effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns and issues raised by team members and guests.
Be able to work with and understand financial information and data, and perform basic math functions.
Be able to positively motivate and lead a team, conveying information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Interact with all guests and all team members, at all times, in a friendly, service-oriented manner.
Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Callaway standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Resort & Gardens' business levels.
Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming to include wearing a nametag when working.
Comply at all times with Callaway Resort & Gardens' standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.
Maintain a friendly and warm demeanor at all times with both team members and guests.
Have knowledge and understanding of all department policies and procedures, and communicate and enforce all policies fairly and consistently with staff.
Keep records to include payroll, equipment maintenance and repair, departmental assets and inventories, training programs, daily work schedules, attendance records, and employee evaluations.
Hire, train, and manage staff as necessary to realize the mission of the Day Butterfly Center.
Have knowledge and understanding of the diversity, natural history, and husbandry of all animals and plants on display within the Day Butterfly Center.
Have knowledge and understanding of all government regulations pertaining to the containment and shipping of non-indigenous butterflies.
Enforce said government regulations for all areas of the Day Butterfly Center.
Maintain, organize, and keep current all documentation, statistics, permits, and licenses required by said government regulations.
Ensure the highest density possible of adult butterflies on display at all times.
Initiate, budget, organize, and process butterfly pupae shipments.
Manage the production of butterflies and maintenance of butterfly colonies at the Day Butterfly Center production greenhouses.
Maintain healthy plants in the display to ensure the feeling of a tropical rainforest while providing nectar sources for the butterflies.
Produce and maintain healthy plants in the production greenhouses to provide nectar sources and host plants for butterfly production as well as tropical plants for display.
Design, develop, implement, and maintain pest control programs and fertilization programs for the conservatory and production greenhouses.
Research, develop, implement, and maintain all aspects of animal husbandry as it pertains to butterflies, moths, and non-lepidopteron displays.
Work with the Marketing, Sales, Events, and Education Departments on tours, interviews, lectures, displays, events, functions, workshops, and facility interpretation.
Attend all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
