The Director of Horticulture helps to create and maintain an engaging and exciting living museum through the Botanical Gardens’ extensive and diverse horticulture collection and seasonal exhibits. This position will be responsible for managing the maintenance, care and growing schedules for the Botanical Gardens’ plant collection including greenhouse tropical plants, trees, shrubs and plants for seasonal exhibits and displays.
The Director of Horticulture provides motivational leadership for a team of Horticulturists, Gardeners and Volunteers. In collaboration with these groups, the horticulture team coordinates thoughtful seasonal displays and a creative exhibit schedule that engages and excites visitors of all ages. This position requires extensive knowledge of plant Latin and common names; greenhouse management and propagation; designing indoor and outdoor displays and annual exhibits; development and implementation of a year-round horticulture plan and budget.
This position requires a degree in horticulture, botany or a related field with at least five years of greenhouse growing, greenhouse management or specific related experience. Working at a not for profit organization, Botanical Garden or nursery/greenhouse is preferred. Effective motivating leadership and management skills are required. Individual must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, have experience with budgets, and practical knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite. The candidate should hold a current New York State Pesticide License, a valid NYS driver's license and be able to perform the physical tasks associated with the job.
