Children's Education Manager (Grade 22, #12749)
Salary: $54,066.00 - $95,755.00

Brookside Gardens, a horticultural display garden in Wheaton, Maryland, seeks a highly motivated Children’s Education Manager who enjoys developing and facilitating original children’s education programs in a botanic garden setting. This position will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing creative and innovative curriculum-based programs for a diverse audience of children, youth groups, and families.

The potential candidate should be a highly collaborative team member who will put Brookside Gardens’ mission first to help deliver remarkable experiences to our visitors. As a critical member of the Guest Experiences team, the Children’s Education Manager will interact regularly with Brookside Gardens visitors, co-workers, volunteers, and Parks staff to provide exemplary customer service. Throughout the year, Brookside Gardens welcomes approximately one million visitors who come to enjoy the beautiful gardens or to participate in engaging programs and events for all ages, including a live butterfly exhibit, summer concert series, and a winter light display.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Plans and manages horticulture-based programming for children, youth groups and families that may include school field trips, summer camps, classes, workshops, conferences and other fee and non-fee interpretive education activities that appeal to diverse audiences.

Researches program topics, develops lesson plans and course outlines as well as materials, exhibits, and other educational aids.

Conducts public outreach, public relations and related marketing and communications activities including social media posts to inform the public of horticultural programs, services, and information.

Coordinates work with other Commission units and outside agencies, interest groups and organizations; establishes and maintains relationships with community organizations, plant societies and special interest groups.

Assists in the preparation and administration of budgets related to program area, procures equipment, supplies, and materials to support work plan.

Recruits and supervises seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns to develop and facilitate programs.

Responds to visitor and customer inquiries concerning horticultural matters.

Education and Experience 

Preferred Qualifications
*Experience teaching in an informal or formal setting.
*Knowledge of principles and practices in interpreting botanical, horticultural or environmental education to the public
*Experience with developing and teaching programs with robust inquiry-based methods to children ages 0-18 yrs.
*Demonstrates good program planning and development skills along with strong interpersonal and communication skills
*Experience working with volunteers.
*Experience creating and organizing large scale events or festivals.
*Ability to communicate in another language preferred.
*Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, biology, or a related science field or formal or informal education field.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in horticulture or related field; and
2. Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in horticulture or closely related field; or
3. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Valid driver's license.
