Job Description 

The Plant Collections Manager is responsible for maintaining database records of BTA’s living collection and ensuring routine inventory. Works closely with the Director of Horticulture to curate and oversee care and growth of plant collections.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Maintain accurate and detailed records of all plants in the living collection through a combination of both field work and office work
Maintain and support the plant accessions database
Document, accession, label (via accession tags), map (via GPS), and track all plants in the living collection according to the best accepted practice for botanical gardens
Ensure that routine inventories and wellness checks are performed on all plants in the living collection annually or as specified by collection type
Produce reports on the living collection regularly and by request as needed; interpret and make collection data accessible to the Executive Director, Director of Horticulture, and other horticultural professionals as needed
Contribute to, interpret, and ensure adherence to all collections-related policies
Ensure accurate identification of all plants within the living collection and ensure taxonomic naming standards and conventions are current in the database as well as in all affiliated reports
Maintain current data on Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and update annually to ensure collection data is available for collaboration with other gardens for the purpose of conservation and research
Utilize a science-based approach to work with horticulture staff to manage and oversee care and design of plant collections
Develop and maintain collection display signage; perform routine inventories and oversee the design and/or ordering and installation of all signage
Attend relevant conferences, symposia, and institutional meetings related to collection management and record-keeping
Continually assess plant collections management, identify needed improvements, and work collaboratively with other departments to discuss options and integrate any needed changes
Serve as a contact for botanical knowledge, alongside the Director of Horticulture and Horticultural Specialists, both internally and externally to ensure institutional alignment with BTA’s mission
Provide plant material and/or collection data to requesting researchers and in doing so actively contribute to the scientific community
Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience 

Bachelor of Science degree in a related field (botany, plant biology, or horticulture)
Strong botanical knowledge complemented by horticultural understanding and experience
Understanding of conservation best practices within the parameters of a botanical garden

Main Skills Required:
Excellent organizational and database management skills
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to prioritize tasks and effectively manage time
Strong note-taking and record-keeping skills; impeccable attention to detail is absolutely required
Ability to perform a range of physical activities including standing for long periods, hiking, working outside in variable and often inclement conditions, as well as sitting for extended periods
