TITLE: Land Manager
REPORTS TO: Director of Horticulture
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time / Salaried / Exempt
The Land Manager is a hands-on position that oversees and provides day-to-day management and strategic direction for the land stewardship program. This dynamic position will help refine and implement the ecological stewardship procedures to achieve short and long-term ecological and aesthetic preservation goals of the organization for natural areas, agricultural lands, open fields, and High Pine Plantings around Bok Tower Gardens. Included in responsibilities are supervision of staff and volunteers, planning, grant writing, reporting, and record-keeping of management activities on all parcels. This position will coordinate with other departments on projects involving the site's open lands as well as educational programs to inform the public of the program's activities.
Create an overall strategy for open lands management in conjunction with the Director of Horticulture, sets short and long-term goals for all parcels taking into account the aesthetic and preservation plans defined by the organization.
Maintain files on activities and set annual maintenance goals for each parcel
Monitors the Land Management budget as well as costs for projects and activities.
Hands-on maintenance and management of the Pine Ridge Preserve areas, nature trails, open fields, and restoration lands by using prescribed fire, herbicide application, tree removal, mowing, and restoration planning
Use of tractor mowing, herbicide spray equipment, chainsawing, in order to maintain open lands.
Coordinates and oversees the work done by the Land Steward Assistant and/or volunteers
Research, develop, and carry out strategies to encourage wildlife in the natural areas by creating favorable habitats
Maintain signage in open areas including interpretive, safety, and posted signage.
Responsible for the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials; performs minor maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of power equipment; refers more serious problems to the Mechanic
Works with other Horticulture departments on projects outside the designated natural areas when necessary or directed by the Director of Horticulture.
Participates in inter-agency workdays, meetings, and training sessions related to position duties and responsibilities
Work with the Education Director to develop programs to train, provide and manage volunteer stewards
Write grants to help fund land stewardship activities. Follows through on grant compliance on budgets, outcomes and final reporting closeout.
Occasional weekend and/or holiday work required to meet departmental deadlines or to provide staff support for BTG special events
Continuous communication and/or interaction with staff, volunteers, visitors, and management
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree or greater in conservation, wildlife biology, or a related field
Knowledge of Florida ecosystems desirable with a minimum of two years previous hands-on experience in maintaining Florida natural areas preferred
Understanding of local, state, and federal laws that govern habitat management
Current FDACS Natural Areas Pesticide Applicator License or the ability to obtain
Current FDACS Prescribed Burn Manager certification or ability to obtain
Valid Drivers' License
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Experience in maintenance of Florida natural areas with the ability to operate small to large power equipment (i.e. tractor, chainsaw, front-end loader, backpack sprayer, lawn equipment)
Experience with Florida's natural areas BMP's/pesticide application
Experience with managing prescribed fires in Florida's ecosystems
Ability to correctly identify desirable and undesirable flora and fauna
Experience in writing work reports and record-keeping
Previous grant writing experience preferred
Experience with computers, Microsoft word, excel, ARCVIEW, Garmin, and Avenza
Ability to understand and interpret instruction to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
Ability to perform strenuous physical work outside in the Florida weather year-round
Ability to lift at least 60 lbs
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to work independently or in a team environment effectively
Work is performed in the field often in remote areas under adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity, as well as a variety of pests, including mosquitoes and ticks.
Work activity consists of continuous repetitive tasks using hands and feet (such as walking long distances, using a machete, backpack sprayer, and handgun).
Work schedule must be flexible to allow for required weather conditions when herbiciding, with the possibility of weekends on occasion.
