Job Description 

Ongoing development and maintenance of the living collections throughout Goizueta Gardens, spanning the 33-acre campus. It requires a broad set of horticultural skills and experience with a diverse plant palette to be able to manage collections informal gardens, naturalistic gardens, and woodlands.

Duties & Responsibilities 

• Perform garden maintenance tasks including planting, weeding, pruning, watering, mulching, and soil improvement practices
• Learn plants in assigned areas, their names and cultural needs
• Make recommendations for relocations, removals and plant acquisitions
• Assist with water management: irrigation expansion, repairs, maximizing well and cistern, utilizing soil moisture sensors and Baseline software system
• Lead volunteer groups in collaboration with Gardens team
• Assist with Plant Records:
• Inventory of assigned areas following guidelines provided
• Keep records of any changes to plants (plantings, removals, relocations, major pruning’s, dead plants, etc.)
• Draft display labels
• Learn about the history and significance of Goizueta Gardens and the living collections within; be prepared to answer visitor questions and lead tours
• Collaborate with other departments, such as Public Programs, Special Events, Development and Membership
• Provide a positive visitor and volunteer experience; be prepared to give directions and answer questions about the AHC and all its components

Other Responsibilities:
• Perform other maintenance tasks as necessary, including leaf and snow removal, path maintenance and removal of litter and debris
• Exhibit familiarity with and willingness to receive training and work with common landscape hand-held and power equipment, including blowers, mowers, tillers, weed-eaters, saws, pruners, sprayers, etc.
• Keep records of any chemical applications (fungicides, pesticides, fertilization, etc.)
• Assist with propagation of collections material, watering in the greenhouse and nursery
• Contribute to team effort to create an Integrated Pest Management Program, including scouting for pests and diseases, pest identification and recommendations for control, applying herbicides, pesticides, fungicides or other products as necessary
• Observe and report back any horticultural, technical, animal, safety or other concerns promptly
• Practice proper tool usage and use appropriate personal protective equipment and ensure that volunteers also use proper safety techniques
• Establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, contractors, nurseries, senior managers, and trustees, with an emphasis on tact, diplomacy, flexibility, collaboration, professionalism, and discretion
• Support general gardens operations and promotion by performing tasks with methods of best practice
• Assist with other duties as assigned

Education and Experience 

• Associates or Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, biology, environmental science or related field from an accredited college or university or demonstrable equivalent in training and experience
• Minimum five years hands-on professional experience; Public Garden experience preferred
• Demonstrated communication skills including effective oral/speaking skills and writing skills
• Must be able to sustain moderate physical exertion with a full range of body motion and lift up to fifty (50) pounds
• Must demonstrate a history of working independently and in a group setting
• Ability to work in all weather conditions
• Valid driver’s license
• Fluency in English
• Computer literacy, including internet research and use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel; some training provided if necessary

Background Check Requirements
• Satisfactory criminal background check required.
• Satisfactory MVR background check required to drive company truck.
