Rockford businessman John Anderson’s vision of creating a unique backyard landscape has evolved into an internationally renowned public garden. Designed and built over a period of nearly forty years by Hoichi Kurisu, former director of the Portland Garden, Anderson Japanese Gardens has become one of the premier Japanese gardens in the world.
We seek an accomplished leader with a proven career of inspiring organizations to reach unprecedented levels of excellence, quality and reputation. Such leadership requires clear vision, passion for the mission, acute organizational skills and the ability to plan and execute through a highly participatory and collaborative engagement with others.
Given the mission of the Garden, the ideal candidate must bring a leadership approach characterized by compassion for people as well as respect for Japanese traditions and cultural values. We seek a leader who is an exceptional relationship builder who can inspire donors, sponsors, business leaders, visitors, members, volunteers and other key stakeholders in their support of the Garden. We are particularly interested in a person who can demonstrate an ability to enhance the visitor experience through adult and children’s programming, garden development and special events and exhibits.
The leader we seek must have a working knowledge of best practices in the management of nonprofit organizations including board development, fundraising, marketing, financial operations and staff management. Of critical importance is the candidate’s ability to transform ideas into specific, strategy-driven project outcomes. This person should demonstrate solid business management principles and/or practices particularly in sales, advertising, promotion and community relations.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. Evidence of continuing professional education and/or leadership in regional and national professional associations is highly desired.
