GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Weekend Waterer assists horticulturists in maintaining plants in various parts of the Conservatory, greenhouses and grounds. The position works Friday, Saturday, and Sunday– typically starting the day at 6:30/7am and ending at 3/3:30pm.

About Us

Opened in 1893, the mission of Phipps is to inspire and educate all with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and promote human and environmental well-being through action and research; and to celebrate its historic glasshouse. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, encompasses 15 acres including a 14-room glasshouse and 23 distinct gardens. Our campus also features industry-leading sustainable architecture and green practices, stunning seasonal flower shows, exclusive commissioned exhibits, renowned orchid and bonsai collections and more.

Duties & Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
-Care for plants, including watering, weeding, fertilizing, dead heading, and maintaining display areas to the highest industry standards.
-Maintain greenhouse plant health by assessing watering needs and irrigating according to established guidelines, watering notes, and sound horticultural judgment.
-Provide information to and answer questions from visitors regarding plants and care.
-Sweep and maintain public display areas.
-Clean tools and maintain equipment.
-Assist with the setup and take-down of floral shows on the premises.
-May need to assist with the butterflies, seasonally.
-Plant, pot, change out, and transplant plants, as needed.
-May be called upon to assist with outside grounds care and snow removal.
-Perform other activities and duties as required.
-Perform most tasks autonomously without manager present.

Education and Experience

MINIMUM POSITION GUIDELINES (Education, Experience and Certification)
-Two-year degree in plant-related field or equivalent experience preferred.

Additional Information

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Knowledge of horticultural methods and plant maintenance.
Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license preferred.
Ability to prioritize and work independently.
Ability to work with the public and co-workers in a pleasant and courteous manner.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SENSORY DIMENSIONS
-Physical mobility: sitting, standing, kneeling, walking, lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds, climbing up to 15 feet.
-Sensory requirement: ability to communicate and respond to staff in a friendly and fair manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS
-Greenhouse and garden atmosphere – hot, humid, sun-filled climate.
-Must be available to work weekends, holidays and shifts.
-Will have occasion to work in or pass through any area of the Conservatory or growing houses.
