Job Description

The Seasonal Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the horticulture collections, including perennial borders and groundcover plantings, gardens, trees, and historic collections. The Seasonal Gardener will also support Lucille’s Garden- a teaching and production garden of edible plants – on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Additional responsibilities include turf maintenance and working with volunteers.

About Us

Tyler Arboretum, a public garden in the Philadelphia suburbs, covers 650 acres of renowned plant collections, champion trees, historic buildings, with 17 miles of hiking trails through woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. Tyler offers workshops, classes, and tours for adults and children throughout the year.

Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain turf, woody and herbaceous plant materials, trails and natural areas in excellent horticultural and aesthetic condition.
Assist with weeding, volunteer management, planting and harvesting in Lucille’s Garden on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the growing season.
Assist in the maintenance of all grounds maintenance equipment and support tools.
Willingness to learn how to use new equipment, skills, and techniques to support the care of the arboretum, including mowing, string trimming, pruning, and leaf blowing paths.
Maintain all structural elements in the landscape, including fences, signage, ponds and water courses, road and walk surfaces, and snow removal.
Assist with special events.
Supervise volunteers and summer camp groups, as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Demonstrate a passion for horticulture, plants, and the natural world.
Be able and willing to work both independently and as part of a team.
Possess good written and verbal communication skills.
Must be able to work with volunteers.
Valid State issued motor vehicle operator’s license and insurability.

Additional Information

Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions, especially heat and humidity.
Requires frequent and prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, pulling, and twisting.
Ability to be active throughout a full day of work, and walk at least 5 miles on and off trail.
Must be comfortable working on a ladder.
Must be able and willing to frequently lift at least 50 lbs.
Current Keep Kids Safe Clearances or ability to obtain by start date.
