Job Description

California Botanic Garden’s Grow Native Nursery (GNN) seeks an energetic, native plant enthusiast. The ideal candidate will have great interpersonal skills and an outgoing personality backed by horticultural knowledge and sales experience (but it is anticipated that training will be provided in the areas of plant knowledge and retail sales). This position is seasonal and ends in late May when the GNN closes for the summer. The sales assistant is primarily responsible for customer service which includes, but is not limited to, assisting customers with plant selections and design questions, informing customers of specials and upcoming events, and responding to customer emails and phone calls.

California Botanic Garden is the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native plants. Our mission is to advance knowledge, conservation, and appreciation of California native plants.

Duties & Responsibilities

-Provide excellent customer service (answer questions about plant selections, design, care, and maintenance)
-Assist with the maintenance of the GNN inventory: water, label, prune, and weed
-Help keep the nursery fully stocked, organized, and clean
-Assist with the maintenance and care for plants in the GNN demonstration garden
-Coordinate with the GNN Manager to create and maintain temporary nursery displays
-Perform weekly inventory counts
-Gain full understanding of the GNN Point of Sale (POS) system

Position information:
Title: Sales Assistant -Grow Native Nursery (GNN)
Status: Hourly, Part-time, Seasonal
Schedule: 20 hours/week, weekends required
Reports to: GNN Manager
Hourly rate: $18.00
Tentative start date: September 15, 2026

Education and Experience

Qualifications:
Must have good communication and organizational skills; basic math skills necessary.
Knowledge of California native plants and their horticultural requirements is ideal; willingness and demonstrated ability to learn rapidly required.
Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.
Computer skills – Point of Sale Systems, Microsoft Office, Google Suite.
Must possess a valid US Driver’s License.

Desired Experience:
Strong retail sales experience
Resourceful problem solver
Knowledge of horticultural requirements of native plants

Physical Demands:
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and walk long distances
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Must be willing to work outside in inclement weather conditions.
