Horticulture Education Coordinator, Part Time, Year Round
The Hershey Gardens is looking for a part-time coordinator to collaborate with the education and program staff on design and layout of beds, maintenance of existing displays, and education about the Hoop House and Student Garden. The Hoop House and Student Garden are dedicated to educating students and guests on the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. All crops harvested from these spaces are donated to local community organizations. This position is 20-28 hours per week with a starting rate of $14.00 per hour.

About Us

Hershey Gardens opened in 1937 with Milton Hershey’s request to “create a nice garden of roses.” More than 85 years later, the small rose garden has blossomed into 23 acres of botanical beauty providing visitors with unique experiences and enriching opportunities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
-Maintain Hoop House and Student Garden as an educational resource. Responsible for coordinating with Education staff in the planning and design of exhibits, seasonal displays and daily care and maintenance of plantings in these areas.
-Assist Manager of Education and Public Programs with development and execution of educational programs utilizing the Hoop House and Student Garden.
-Assist with other programs as needed under the direction of the Manager of Education and Public Programs.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to instruct elementary, middle school, and high school students and guide behavior in a positive, proactive manner
Ability to work occasional weekends
Work may be performed in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments and weather conditions
Requires physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing or walking
Pennsylvania driver’s license required
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Occasional need to help with set-up or tear-down of events
Demonstrated basic skills in oral and written communication
Demonstrated ability to consistently represent Hershey Gardens and The M.S. Hershey Foundation in a positive, professional manner
Demonstrated ability to perform duties professionally under public situations.

Education and Experience

Minimum Education and Experience Required:
Documented training in horticulture, related studies or a minimum of two (2) years of work in horticulture preferred. Continuing education courses in horticulture or a related field helpful.
Two years of experience working in horticulture or related field preferred. Experience in educational programming helpful.
This position requires criminal history background checks in addition to child abuse background checks as a condition of employment.
