Oversee care and maintenance of the historic site including repair of greenhouse structures and their mechanical systems. Care for historic and sales plant collections including orchids, exotic house plants, citrus fruits, camellias, and herbs. Monitor, fertilize, prune, repot, groom and stage, and manage pest control. Develop annual work plan, site budget, and generate regular reports. Meet or exceed attendance and revenue goals through plant sales, membership sales, public programs, and group tours. Grow plant material and order plants and supplies that are creatively displayed for special and daily sales. Collaborate with marketing on promotion of the greenhouses. Hire, train, and supervise greenhouse assistant manager, greenhouse assistants, and volunteers. Some evening and weekend work, and on-call emergency response required.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Plant Science, Botany, Horticulture) with a minimum five years of related employment experience, or equivalent combination of skilled credential (Master’s degree preferred). Enthusiasm for public history and public programming. Capable of effectively working independently under limited supervision. Experience working for non-profit organizations or managing greenhouse site operations. Skilled experience managing department budgets and tracking revenue. Solution oriented problem-solving ability. Supervisory experience and familiarity with team approach. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to set and balance priorities and resource allocation. Fully competent computer skills, including advanced use of MS Word and Excel spreadsheet functions, databases, internet research, and e-mail management. Excellent communication skills (writing, speaking, presenting, and listening) with the ability to articulate eloquently Historic New England’s mission, aspirations, programs, and pursuit of excellence, which is pervasive throughout the organization. Deep understanding of team approach and objectiveness and respect for diverse perspectives and skillsets. Valid driver’s license and means of transportation.
