Job Description

Job Title: Garden Designer

Job Type: Full-time exempt

Salary: $85,000-$105,000

Start Date: ASAP

Summary:

Curtis & Windham Architects seeks a Garden Designer to join our established landscape studio. This role offers the opportunity to shape landscapes as a central design discipline—establishing the direction of each project in dialogue with architecture and interiors.

Founded in 1992, our practice is grounded in the belief that landscape, architecture, and interiors should be developed in tandem—each strengthening the other to create cohesive, enduring work. We approach gardens as an essential extension of architecture, using structure and planting to define outdoor rooms that complete the composition of a place.

The Garden Designer will contribute from the earliest stages of design, bringing both horticultural knowledge and design sensibility to landscapes that balance spatial clarity with planting.

About Us

Curtis & Windham Architects is a Houston-based firm renowned for skillfully blending traditional architectural principles with a keen awareness of modern living. The firm’s collaborative, client-focused process results in spaces that are both contextually appropriate and individually tailored. With a diverse portfolio spanning private residences, estates, commercial projects, and public institutions, the work showcases a meticulous balance of scale, proportion, and good manners.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Contribute to the design of gardens and landscapes across a range of residential and institutional projects
• Develop conceptual landscape diagrams, garden layouts, and planting strategies
• Prepare planting plans, garden studies, and presentation drawings
• Assist in the design of terraces, courtyards, motor courts, and garden rooms
• Research plant palettes appropriate to project climate and site conditions
• Coordinate with landscape contractors, nurseries, and consultants
• Participate in site visits to guide the execution of landscape installations
• Support project teams in the preparation of drawings and documentation for landscape work

Education and Experience

• 3–7 years of professional experience, preferably with residential landscape projects
• Strong knowledge of horticulture and planting composition
• Interest in classical garden traditions and architectural landscapes
• Strong graphic, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary studio

Additional Information

The ideal candidate has a strong design sensibility and the ability to initiate and lead landscape concepts alongside the partners, drawing on historic precedent to develop original, site-specific work.

A sensitivity to proportion, planting composition, and the relationship between architecture and landscape is essential.

Curtis & Windham Architects maintains a collaborative studio environment in which architects, landscape designers, and interior designers work closely together. The office values careful research, attention to detail, and a shared commitment to design that will endure.
