Job Description
Red Butte Garden is looking for a Director of Programs who can provide vision and leadership for the Garden’s educational activities and education staff, can cultivate and maintain strategic community partnerships, and lead a dynamic team of individuals towards the fulfillment of the Garden’s mission. The Director also accepts primary responsibility for keeping the Garden’s education programs at the forefront of excellence in the community and in the public garden profession. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs serves as a key member of the Garden’s senior management team.
About Us
Red Butte Garden & Arboretum (RBGA) is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Intermountain West and together with the University of Utah, is the State Arboretum of Utah. We are located on 100 acres in the foothills on the eastern edge of the University of Utah campus. The Garden has welcomed guests since 1985 and consists of over 21 acres of developed gardens and five miles of hiking trails winding through an extensive Natural Area. The Garden which is community-funded, is renowned for its numerous plant collections, display gardens, 580,000 springtime blooming bulbs; including a vast collection of daffodils; gorgeous private event spaces, a world-class outdoor concert series, and award-winning horticulture-based educational programs.
Duties & Responsibilities
-Coordinate, implement, and oversee the Gardens’ educational programs including outreach and interpretation.
-Develop and grow the Gardens’ formal and informal educational programs for adults and children in conjunction with the Gardens’ strategic plan.
-Supervise, mentor, coach and evaluate Education staff and volunteers.
-Meet regularly with staff to review goals and assess progress.
-Plan and conduct regular department meetings, ad hoc meetings as necessary, and long-range planning meetings for communication, planning, evaluation, and discussion.
-Manage hiring and conduct annual performance evaluations of Program staff members.
-Promote growth and excellence in all educational programs offered by the Garden, and assure that all programs are consistent with the long-range plans of the organization.
-Collaborate with other Garden departments, other gardens, other museums, schools, universities, and local/regional/national organizations in developing, refining and presenting cutting-edge educational programming.
-Develop the annual Programs Department budget and participate in developing the combined annual operating budget for the Garden.
-Articulate revenue goals and expense needs, prepare the departmental budget and develop strategies to carry out programs and monitor financial performance.
-Identify and, in collaboration with the Development Department, submit proposals to funding sources appropriate for the Garden’s programs, including local, regional and national foundations.
-Reach all annual budget goals for the Programs Department, as set forth in consultation with the Garden’s Executive Director.
-Actively participate in the daily activities of the Garden.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Education, Environmental Science, Horticulture, Botany, Administration or related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communications skills required.
Masters degree in Education, Environmental Science, Horticulture, Botany, Administration, or related field preferred.
