Job Description

Manages and develops living collections, trails and other garden infrastructure for assigned area(s) of SCBG using student employees and volunteers to support the mission of SCBG. Other duties as assigned.

The South Carolina Botanical Garden (SCBG) has blossomed into a 230-acre sanctuary for diversity by re-engaging people in the living world. We strive to serve as an interdisciplinary resource focusing on teaching, research, and outreach that advances awareness and understanding of plants, animals, minerals, and our culture. We exist for enjoyment and education and are available and accessible to all people. Our grounds are open and free of charge 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.

Duties & Responsibilities

60% – Essential – Area management and development: Works with Executive Director and Assistant Director to plan and maintain engaging garden spaces. Maintains trails, infrastructure and garden areas consistently to provide a safe and engaging visitor experience. Performs general horticultural practices including planting, fertilizing, irrigating, weeding and controlling pests. Performs aesthetic maintenance such as mowing, leaf removal and mulching. Collaborates with nursery manager to source and propagate plants for assigned areas.

25% – Essential – Personnel and volunteer leadership: Effectively manages and provides continuing education and mentoring for student and volunteer workers assigned to area(s) to provide necessary care of the plant collections, irrigation, equipment and pathways and trails using both horticultural and sustainable best practices.

15% – Essential – Special projects and event preparation: Plans and participates in on- and off-campus project, outreach and event activities related to SCBG mission. Collaborates with education and visitor services teams to maximize outreach opportunities and to deliver an outstanding experience to our retail and event clients and visitors.

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:
Education – High School or Equivalent – Custodial, groundskeeping or maintenance experience directly related to the area of employment.

Preferred Requirements:
Education – Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree – Horticulture or related fields
Work Experience – 2+ years experience

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Acts as Lead – Acts as a Lead by guiding the work of others who perform essentially the same work.

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITIES
No Budget Responsibilities – No fiscal responsibility for the department’s budget.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Standard Hours: 37.5

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Anticipated Salary Range: $44,700 – $52,000

Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson’s compensation guidelines.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations

Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
