Job Description
This position manages and supports a variety of school and camp programs, including but not limited to school field trip visits, school-aged camps, programs visiting schools, online lessons, education classes, shared programming, special events, and other educational experiences. The Assistant Manager supervises assigned instructing staff and volunteers, leading them to deliver interactive, hands-on, plant-based curriculum for PreK-12th grade students. Additionally, the Assistant Manager develops and revises programs, coordinates program logistics, manages resources, keeps accurate records, communicates with instructors and participants, and supports the Gardens’ efforts. This position will also oversee a team of volunteers.
The position is primarily based out of Chatfield Farms in Littleton, but will also work at the Plains Conservation Center in Aurora and the Gardens’ York Street location in Denver as assigned.
Salary
$25.16 – $31.45 – Per Hour

Duties & Responsibilities
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares and delivers assigned programs, including but not limited to onsite guided tours, school field trips, camps, events, classes, and offsite outreach.
- Manages schedules, records, and communicates programs, facilities, instructors, resources, contract requirements, registrations and other data.
- Coordinates logistics of and prepares for assigned programs, including but not limited to materials, equipment, records, and adherence to guidelines.
- Leads programs at Denver Botanic Gardens locations to groups of school-age students.
- Provides program introduction to groups of elementary-age students, teachers, and parent chaperones.
- Teaches online or virtual programs to school-age students.
- Teaches Cultivation Cruiser programs to groups of PreK-12th grade students at area schools and other locations.
- Ensures relevant records for garden camps are up to date, including but not limited to instructor qualifications, camper paperwork, and adherence to health and safety guidelines.
- Leads children in hands-on, interactive activities during camps.
- Supervises children during camp lunchtime.
- Maintains a safe environment for participants and addresses first aid issues.
- Coordinates and supervises volunteers as part of the Education team, including regular information-sharing and communication. Implements volunteer training sessions specific to assigned programming
- Maintains files, keeps records, and prepares reports as needed.
- Delivers presentations, trainings and programs as needed.
- Researches and resolves disputes and problems within established guidelines.
- Analyzes and communicates the effects or results of programs, efforts and initiatives to further departmental and institutional goals.
- Works with all departments to assure the highest quality experience for all Denver Botanic Gardens visitors.
- Maintains satisfactory working relationships with managers, co-workers and others.
- Maintains a positive, helpful and solution-oriented demeanor when responding to or serving members and visitors.
- Regular attendance at the worksite may be required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be able to maintain accurate records, files, and schedules.
- Must be able to effectively prioritize, supervise, and collaborate with other Gardens staff
- Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
- Must currently possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Colorado State driver’s license, plus an acceptable driving record. Reliable access to a dependable, insured, and the privately-owned vehicle is necessary.
- Must currently qualify, or able to qualify, as a child care director, including CPR and First Aid Certification.
- Must have demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in relevant programming and management.
- Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Ability to work overtime as necessary.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
- Knowledge and experience in teaching a variety of age levels and diverse populations using a hands-on, constructivist philosophy are desirable.
- Previous experience supervising summer camps, daycares, or informal youth education is desirable.
- Experience teaching biological, botanical, or environmental topics is desirable.
- Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
- Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
- Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Education and Experience
Bachelors degree and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in teaching school aged children is required.
Minimum 2 years supervisory experience required.
More extensive teaching or coordinating experience is preferred, including previous experience in formal community or higher education, school settings, or informal education at gardens or museums.
Position requires a valid driver’s license.
