Reports to: Director of Horticulture and Garden Operations

Descanso Gardens seeks up to two interns to work 15 hours weekly for 20 in Descanso Garden’s Camellia Collection. By the conclusion of the internship the intern will have an understanding of:

  • Camellia cultural requirements, the history of camellia cultivation, and camellia cultivation at Descanso Gardens
  • Care and pruning of camellias
  • Care and pruning of camellia companion plants
  • Propagation of rare camellias, grafting
  • Sustainable gardening methods

After initial training, the camellia intern will be assigned to a section of the camellia garden. They will work with the camellia horticulturist to prune, thin, and care for the camellias in their assigned area. Additionally, the intern will work with the plant propagation and display horticulturist and plant records to identify, propagate and map camellias in their section. The intern will also research one camellia species or companion, and prepare a 20 minute presentation for Descanso staff and/or volunteers.

This position is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of a full range of standard manual and power gardening equipment and tools, including hedge trimmer, extendable gas-powered tree trimmer, soil tiller, compactor, seated lawn mower, bypass pruner, lopers, chain saw, folding saw, or any other related tools. Position requires operating knowledge of computers, standard office equipment, vehicles and two-way radios.
This is an outdoor physically-orientated and demanding position which requires:

  • Ability to move equipment to various locations within the Gardens which may not be accessible via motor vehicle.
  • The ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • The ability to walk, kneel, bend, stoop, sit, crouch, drive vehicles, and climb ladders.
  • Exposure to various noise levels on a daily basis.
  • Working outdoors in inclement weather, including cold, rain and heat, as well as night-time conditions.


  • Currently enrolled in a horticulture, environmental science, botany, biology or agriculture degree program.
  • Experience in a garden, farming or horticulture setting, desired.
  • Must demonstrate plant i.d. skills
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational skills
  • Must demonstrate average written and verbal communication skills.
  • Individual must be able to work unsupervised and to see projects through to completion.
  • Must be able to work individually and in a group.
  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License, required.

Compensation: $9/hr.
