The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden is currently being developed on 460 acres along the airport corridor near Settler’s Ridge, and will open Phase I this summer. The Garden will be a unique cultural amenity with artistic and inspirational displays of hardy plants; horticultural and environmental education programs; and research into regional botanical and conservation issues. The Garden is committed to taking a leadership role in the stewardship of the natural world and building healthy ecosystems.

The Horticulture and Facilities Manager ensures that the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden conforms to the highest standards of museum and Botanic Garden practices by overseeing the development of gardens, plant collections and facilities. This position is responsible for the construction of horticultural exhibits, and maintenance of living plant collections, Garden buildings and infrastructure. This position reports directly to the Garden’s President, but works closely with other staff. This is a full time regular and exempt position.


Reclaiming the Land and Building the Garden
• Creates and maintains innovative and artistic horticultural and botanical displays
• Implements grants pertaining to site development and monitors project budgets 
• Works with the Garden’s staff to prepare RFPs and bidding documents
• Implements best management practices with regard to grounds and facilities
• Ensures staff and contractor’s work meets a standard of excellence
• Maintains an inventory of tools and equipment and schedules preventative maintenance

Administration - Building the Organization and its Programs
• Leads a high performing and cohesive horticultural and site staff including the Plant Curator, Gardeners, seasonal workers, volunteers and interns as well as security personnel and custodians
• Responsible for developing the Garden’s Collections Plan and Collection Management Policy
• Develops and manages the department’s operational and project budgets
• Sets annual goals for the horticulture staff and tracks performance
• Plans for professional development of horticulture staff
• Develop the Garden’s safety protocols and safety policies
• Participates as staff liaison to the Building, Horticulture and Environment Committees, and ensures committee objectives are coordinated with department staff
• Oversees the horticulture department work schedules, record keeping, financial transactions and compliance with  the Personnel Policy

Building Awareness and Engaging the Community
• Participates in Botanic Garden programs and activities
• Helps organize and lead student and volunteer work teams
• Assists with details of events, facility rentals and programs as needed
• Assists with educational training programs related to horticulture, gardening and the environment
• Builds partnerships and maintains positive relationships with individuals and organizations in the community and beyond

• Leads tours of the Garden for potential donors and foundation officers
• Assists with Garden functions, events, facility rentals and programs to help insure financial goals and customer’s expectations are met

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany, natural science or related field 
• 5 years of progressive experience in managing horticultural staff,  preferably in a public garden
• Excellent oral and written communications and proficient with the Microsoft Office suite
• Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to motivate others
• Experience in project management and overseeing the work of various building trades
• Proven success in managing a variety of assignments simultaneously, on schedule and with strict attention to detail
• Flexible self-starter
• Knowledge of zone 6 plants, garden design aesthetics, plant maintenance and irrigation
• Experience with maintenance of grounds equipment and public physical facilities 

• Works primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions
• Occasional evening and/or weekend work
• Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds
