Reports to: Discovery Programs Coordinator
Term:  March 11 – October 31, 2014
Tuesday – Saturday during spring, 4 days / week during summer and fall (schedule must include Saturdays).
Discovery staff at Brooklyn Botanic Garden provides hands-on nature education for children of all ages and their caregivers, connecting our diverse community with the natural world The seasonal instructor facilitates BBG’s Kids’ Discovery Stations. These free, hands-on activity stations are available to the public for drop-in engagement on a daily basis in a beautiful garden setting. The Instructor facilitates the program daily, develops engaging program content, manages materials and logistics, and closely mentors the adult volunteers and teen apprentices who engage visitors at the stations. 
At the Kids’ Discovery Stations, visiting groups and families investigate real plants and specimen, interact with composting worms, read stories, use scavenger hunts to explore the Garden grounds, and learn about a different seasonal topic each week. On weekends and summer days, planting and craft activities are also offered for families, free of charge. 2014 is the 100th anniversary of the Children’s Garden at Brooklyn Botanic Garden, commemorated with special events and activities highlighted through Discovery programming.
• Plan and facilitate daily Kids’ Discovery Stations, with support from the Discovery Programs Coordinator. 
• Engage with a diverse range of visitors on a daily basis, providing a welcoming, educational experience. 
• Collaborate with the Program Coordinator on developing program content and developing and co-leading trainings for adult volunteers and teen apprentices. 
• Supervise and mentor teen apprentices and adult volunteers in public speaking and environmental education as they facilitate stations. 
• Manage volunteer schedule and needs. 
• Track attendance and evaluate program success. Purchase supplies as necessary. 
• The Seasonal Instructor will also assist with watering and basic horticultural maintenance of BBG’s Education Greenhouse plant collection. 
• Assist Program Coordinator with special projects throughout the growing season.

• Career background that demonstrates an interest and commitment to hands-on education and informal science learning.
• Experience teaching children of all ages.
• Confident supervising and mentoring adult volunteers.
• Experienced and comfortable mentoring youth.
• Confident engaging large school and camp groups in an informal learning setting.
• Strong interpersonal skills and keen interest and ease communicating with children, teens and adults.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
• Ideal candidates will have experience and comfort working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds. 
Compensation: $14.00/hour
