Term: mid-February through mid-November, 2014, Tuesday-Saturday
Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s historic Children’s Garden will celebrate its 100th year of providing hands-on garden education for children in 2014. BBG is seeking a Children’s Garden seasonal assistant coordinator who will assist the Children’s Garden Coordinator with the implementation of gardening programs for children ages 2-13 during this exciting centennial year.  The seasonal assistant will help develop curriculum centered on the garden, supervise seasonal instructors and teen apprentices, as well as support horticultural upkeep in the Children’s Garden. The assistant will also co-lead a young child/caregiver gardening program two mornings per week in the spring and fall. Children’s Garden participants and staff represent the diverse backgrounds and ethnicities found in Brooklyn.
Primary Responsibilities:  
Assist the Children’s Garden Coordinator with the implementation of Children’s Garden programs, including: 
• Mentor seasonal instructors in lesson plan development and behavior management. 
• Support instructors in their mentoring of teen apprentices, assistant teachers assigned to each program from BBG’s Garden Apprentice Program. 
• Communicate with participants’ families/caregivers. 
• Manage program supplies and plants. 
• Direct teaching as a Trees and Saplings Instructor on Wednesday and Thursday mornings in spring and fall and as a substitute instructor as needed.
• Develop and lead a hands-on afterschool garden club for teens on Tuesdays in spring and fall, including coordinating a harvest to serve salad greens in the HS cafeteria
• Provide horticultural support for the children’s vegetable plots as well as ornamental and display beds within the 1 acre garden.
• Help with events related to the Children’s Garden and the centennial celebration as needed.
• BA or BS degree in education, environmental education, museum studies, agriculture, botany, biology or related field. 
• Significant direct experience teaching children and gardening required.
• Strong interpersonal skills and keen interest and ease communicating with children, teens and adults.
• Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
• Ideal candidates will have experience and comfort working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds. 
Compensation: $17/hour
