The American Horticultural Society (AHS), a national 501(c)3 nonprofit membership organization located in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Digital Communications Manager. Headquartered on a historic 25-acre property on the Potomac River called River Farm, the AHS has nearly 20,000 members across the country and around the world. Members receive a variety of benefits (including The American Gardener magazine, a reciprocal garden admissions program, an annual seed exchange, and exclusive online resources) as well as help support the Society’s vision of “making America a nation of gardeners, a land of gardens.”

The role of the Digital Communications Manager is to coordinate and enhance the organization’s online and electronic communications as an integral part of the Communications Department team. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Writing and editing content for AHS website (www.ahs.org), e-newsletters, social networking sites, and other online communications media.
• Coordinating website updates and maintenance.
• Developing strategy for, coordinating, and updating the AHS digital publication archive.
• Creating and distributing mass e-mails and e-newsletters.
• Tracking, gathering, and analyzing user data from web/blog stats, surveys, and e-newsletter reports.
• Interacting on a daily basis with AHS members and constituents and responding to or redirecting questions.
• Assisting with implementation of any ongoing website enhancements.
• Exploring new online communications tools and technologies and proposing appropriate innovations to build the organization's online presence and foster members' sense of community.  Additional tasks may include assisting with special projects generated by other departments, in terms of form-building, image optimization, PowerPoint production, and related technical details.

Requirements include: excellent writing and editing skills, particularly for online media; demonstrated ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage concurrent tasks with meticulous attention to detail; proficiency with PC applications such as Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint; ability to work with CSS and HTML; experience with WYSIWYG content management systems; experience producing e-newsletters; experience using social networking platforms to foster member/client interaction and community building; familiarity with photo editing and optimization for web use; experience creating and editing online videos and/or podcasts; and prior experience or willingness to become proficient with Blackbaud software, including The Raiser’s Edge database and NetCommunity Spark. Experience with or an interest in gardening a strong plus, as is experience with revenue generation.

Salary is based on experience and qualifications. The AHS offers benefits such as health and dental insurance, vacation and sick time, and a 403(b) plan with employer contributions.
