Campaign Communications Writer

The Morton Arboretum

General Summary:  
The Campaign Communications Writer will write and edit communications to support philanthropic initiatives, especially fundraising campaign efforts, at The Morton Arboretum. The position will work closely with the Vice President of Development, key volunteer leadership, and the President and CEO to craft key messages for donors, prospects, and other constituencies about the importance of philanthropic support of the Arboretum, and to elicit donor support, particularly related to the campaign.  The Writer will work closely with the Executive Office, Development, Marketing and Communications, and other program areas to ensure a consistent, compelling institutional voice regarding support for the Arboretum’s mission and goals. Responsibilities include strategizing, researching, organizing, writing, and editing content for multiple channels of philanthropic communication.  This is a temporary position for the duration of the capital campaign expected to run through 2018.
Job Qualifications
Previous Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree required, preferably in journalism, communications, English or related field. Minimum of five years of writing experience and a demonstrated understanding of persuasive, professional writing techniques that can support philanthropic endeavors and are customized to organizational needs and objectives. Demonstrated comfort working with and/or ghost-writing for executives, high-level volunteers, and subject matter experts such as scientists required. Experience in AP style writing for similar causes such as environmental or horticultural programs preferred. Proficiency in using the full suite of Microsoft Office programs.
Physical/Mental Requirements
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills required. Demonstrated interest in the mission of the Arboretum and a keen understanding of the importance of philanthropic support to the success of non-profit organizations.  Ability to successfully navigate and work in a fast- paced, deadline-driven environment. Proven ability to work effectively with executive leadership and high-level volunteers. Well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of synthesizing large amounts of complex information into a coherent, compelling story that can be tailored to
multiple audiences and communication channels.  Must have independent initiative and also be able to function successfully in a team environment. Positive, energetic, and flexible style essential.
