Are you a forward thinking strategist with an affinity for Mother Nature’s beauty? Then you might be the marketing and outreach director who can bring to life the mission and vision of the American Public Gardens Association.  This 7,000 member, 500+ institution-serving, national membership association for gardens, arboreta and green spaces throughout North America strives to fulfill its vision of a world where public gardens are indispensable.  To make this vision come to fruition in an accountable, measurable way, our new marketing and outreach director will be someone who:
 
  • Creates, writes, facilitates, implements and motivates a team to achieve the measurable objectives of an annual marketing PR program in collaboration with the executive director, board and APGA team members.  
  • Supervises a team of marketing-minded professionals, including but not limited to communication and membership program managers.
  • Plans and manages APGA’s marketing budget, as well as budgets under the marketing umbrella, which could include - but are not limited to – membership, communications & logistics, etc.
  • Proactively drives business development activities for the Association and its quarterly magazine Public Garden. Negotiates on behalf of the Association and its magazine with media agents to secure advertisements and broaden relationships/partnerships.
    • Can demonstrate mastery over a quarterly publication requiring editorial calendar management, media kit development, copywriting and editing, print and graphic design production experience. 
  • Plays a leadership role at national events for the Association - its annual conference and National Public Gardens Day are examples.
  •  Leads the Association’s corporate communications activities including internal communication with APGA colleagues, external communication with APGA members, public relations initiatives with target audiences including journalists, and all marketing focused external vendors and consultants. 
  • Demonstrates mastery of association analytics, including those from membership databases, mailing list applications, financial reports, Google analytics from websites, etc.
  • Demonstrates foresight to anticipate, analyze and interpret future audience trends and current audience needs.
  • Advocates for APGA’s brand and how it is perceived in all mediums.  Serves as the subject matter expert on the Association’s image, and empowers others to rise to higher levels through showcasing the brand in all external communications.
Requirements:
  • 10 years’ marketing and PR experience, with two of those 10 at the director level, or five consistent years of experience at the marketing manager level.  Agency experience is preferred.
  • College degree in marketing, PR, advertising, journalism, communications or English. A Master’s degree is preferred, but a substitution for work experience is acceptable.
  • Project management experience with all types of simultaneous deadlines and deliverables, including the ability to lead an agency relationship.
  • Strong organizational, writing and editing skills – with an intuitive ability to understand communication needs, the empathy to discern emotions from facts, and the capacity to capitalize via the written word for the betterment of the APGA community.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; e-mail marketing programs such as myEMMA, Exact Target, or Constant Contact; social media (Facebook), web analytics & advertising tools. Knowledge of membership database software such as iMIS or Blackbaud Altru is a plus.
  • Visual acuity in graphic design standards to heighten the APGA brand and programs and the capability to translate these to all online mediums.
  • Compelling presenter who is capable of on-camera interviews and representing APGA in every medium from the boardroom to the spotlight (TV, radio, online, print).
