REPORTS To:       Vice President of Marketing
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, one of the borough’s premier cultural institutions, with a 100-year legacy of teaching urban-dwellers about the art and science of gardening in cities, is seeking a whip-smart Communications Director to guide its communications during an unprecedented period of growth and revitalization.
The Communications Director leads the Garden’s media strategy and execution with a deep understanding of the BBG’s varied offerings in education, public programs, horticulture, fundraising, and capital projects. In addition to serving as the Garden’s primary liaison to all press and media, the Communications Director is a strategic partner – with the Vice President of Marketing and Public Engagement – in crafting and disseminating key messages to targeted audiences.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
  • Participate as a senior-level manager in the Garden’s strategic planning
  • Serve as primary contact for all media, coordinating press coverage around Garden projects, programs, and events
  • Act as the Garden’s (eloquent, smart, witty) spokesperson in print, on air, and online publications
  • Write and produce press materials, including fact sheets, press releases, talking points, B-Roll, and other collateral
  • Identify, develop and pitch stories to appropriate media outlets, national and local
  • Serve as the speechwriter for the President (occasional)
  • Media train and support BBG staff for interviews
  • Plan and implement press events, including but not limited to the Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest award; opening of major capital projects, etc.
  • Represent BBG at various after hours press events, frequently working beyond normal work week (as well as weekends) responding to media requests. Remains “on-call” 24/7 for media emergencies
  • Maintain regular contact with target media and respond to media requests
  • Identify and cultivate new relationships in national and local media
  • Manage the Garden’s film and still photo shoots.  Identify appropriate requests; negotiate pricing and contracts; oversee execution of shoots, working with the Garden’s security, visitor services, and other departments as necessary
  • Recruit, hire and train. Manage all external firms and freelancers. Hire and manage Communications consultants on an ad-hoc basis
  • Performs other related duties or special projects as directed
  • College Degree with three (3) to five (5) years experience in senior public relations management
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills
  • Flexible, team player, self motivated, able to build consensus
  • Experience in non profit setting a plus; knowledge of horticulture a plus.
  • Demonstrated record of cultivating and managing stories in print, on line, and on air.
  • Thoughtful, articulate, energetic, savvy and passionate about the Garden’s mission and values.
