General Horticulture Internship

The vision of the Conservation & Horticulture Program of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is rooted in our mission statement: to save tropical plant diversity by exploring, explaining, and conserving the world of tropical plants.  By working closely with our colleagues at a private botanic garden in Palm Beach County, we have developed a unique program that exposes interns to two very different professional arenas in the botanic world.  Interns will spend a term of six months at each location.

Our interns are able to develop a wide range of skills by working alongside experts in two different botanic gardens.  Interns will gain exposure to conservation and horticultural methods with a focus on native, Caribbean and tropical plants.  Interns will gain an intimate understanding of the role of botanic gardens in horticulture, plant diversity, education and the community.

Under the direction of a mentor, each intern will select an independent project topic, which will be completed throughout the term and culminate in a public presentation.  Interns participate in four group field trips throughout the program.  Field trips are selected each year to introduce interns to various ecosystems, botanic institutions and professional avenues within the botanic world.

The General Horticulture internship emphasizes developing horticultural knowledge and skills through working hands-on with native, Caribbean and tropical species.  This is a rotational program where the intern will have the opportunity to work directly with various horticultural staff and assist with all aspects of horticultural activities including, but not limited to: general care and maintenance, pruning, plant propagation and display.

The prospective candidate should have or be pursuing a degree in Horticulture, Biology, Botany, Environmental Studies/Sciences or related fields at the undergraduate or graduate level, or have demonstrated interest and ability relating to plant conservation or tropical horticulture.

Prospective candidates should be highly motivated and well organized with a strong work ethic, in addition to being willing and able to work full days outdoors in hot and humid environments. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a thorough background check prior to beginning the internship.
