General Summary

 

: The Assistant Manager of Curriculum and Instruction develops and oversees the Arboretum’s School Programs. This includes program development, coordination with teachers and district curriculum developers, scheduling, budgeting, record-keeping, and evaluating regular programs for school classrooms, on-site field trips, in-classroom outreach programs, and teacher training. This position works closely with the Manager of Curriculum and Instruction, Coordinator of School Programs, the Manager of Youth and Family Programs and the Director of Education to recruit and train Education Program Guides, and other program instructors, who strive to make full use of the Arboretum’s resources to help educators and students gain skill and knowledge in areas prioritized by the National Teaching Standards and evolving Core Curriculum.

Job Qualifications

Previous Training and Experience

Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree in education and two years experience teaching children in a formal classroom setting, a Master’s degree is preferred. Two prior years supervisory or leadership experience required, management training is preferred. Position requires a current or previous teaching certificate: Type 03 Elementary Education with Science Endorsement, Type 09 Secondary Biological Science, or equivalent. Must have demonstrated experience in the design and development of age appropriate informal education programs and school curriculum. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be computer proficient in Microsoft Office, especially in word processing and spreadsheet programs.

Physical/Mental Requirements

Must be dependable, flexible, and committed to customer satisfaction. The position requires a highly organized person with the ability and experience to manage multiple simultaneous programs while maintaining high attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills required, must have the ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner, communicate clearly, and work effectively with a diverse group of people. This position is an ambassador for the Arboretum, its mission and resources to program guides, teachers, school administrators, and students in an accurate, positive, and constructive manner. Stamina and ability to travel over one mile on paved, wood chipped, and dirt paths over varied and uneven terrain. Become certified and maintain certification in First Aid and CPR. (Classes are offered at the Arboretum.) Must possess a valid Illinois driver’s license and clean driving record. (A Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check may be required.) Act as Education Program manager-on-duty on designated weekend days. Work evening and peak-season weekend assignments as needed.

Working Conditions

Combined indoor and outdoor work situations.

• Outdoor settings include leading groups of children and adults in vigorous physical activities, in all weather conditions throughout the four seasons.

• Necessary equipment requires the employee to be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
