The Arboretum - State Botanical Garden of Kentucky

The Arboretum (State Botanical Garden of Kentucky) is a 100 acre green-space located in the heart of Lexington, Kentucky.  The Arboretum includes a recently completed Kentucky Children’s Gardens; a home-demonstration horticulture and vegetable garden; a rose garden; and The Walk Across Kentucky, a native plant collection arranged by ecotype.  Three internships will be offered during the summer of 2013.


Rose Garden Intern (1 position)

The Rose Garden Intern will be responsible for maintaining the collection of over 1,200 unique rose varieties, as well as the fragrance garden.  The intern will work with Arboretum staff and volunteers, and be responsible for planting, pruning, label making, record keeping, integrated pest management, and other cultural tasks. 


Education Intern (1 position)

Education Intern will assist with interpretation and educational exhibits, develop adult education opportunities, and assist with activities in the Kentucky Children’s Garden. 


Children’s Garden Horticulture Intern (1 position)

The Children’s Garden Horticulture Intern will maintain the native plant exhibits in the Kentucky Children’s Garden.   These exhibits include a tall-grass prairie, woodland garden, streams and wetlands, wildflower meadows, and a Native American teaching Garden.  The intern will also assist the native plant team to maintain specialty ecosystems on the Walk Across Kentucky.




Candidates should possess a strong work ethic and desire to learn.  Basic skills in botany, horticulture, or public education are recommended but not required.  Applicants must pass a background check, possess a valid driver’s license, and be capable of performing physical labor outdoors.


Hiring information:


Duration: 10 weeks (Starting late May/early June) 40 hr/wk

Compensation: $8.00 - 10.00/hour depending on experience
