Woods Is New Director at VanDusen
The Vancouver Park Board and VanDusen Botanical Garden Association has announced the appointment of Christopher Woods to the position of Garden Director. Woods will assume his new responsibilities September 18, 2006. A native of England, Woods started his career as an apprentice horticulturist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He also worked at three other gardens in the United Kingdom - Portmeirion in Wales, the National Trust Bateman's in Sussex and Cliveden in Buckinghamshire. In 1981 he moved to the U.S. and was, until 2003, Director and Chief Garden Designer at Chanticleer in Wayne, PA. Most recently, Woods was Executive Director of the Ojai Valley Land Conservancy in Ojai, CA. Prior to that he held the post of Vice President for Horticulture and External Operations for the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden. An accomplished speaker and writer, Woods is the author of numerous articles and was the guest editor of Brooklyn Botanic Gardens' handbook Perennials and Their Uses. He is the author of The Encyclopedia of Perennials: A Gardener's Guide. In 2003 he was awarded the Professional Citation by APGA for significant achievements in public horticulture. He fills the vacancy at VanDusen left by the resignation of Jill Cherry, who left to become Director of Gardens for the Royal Horticulture Society in England.
