Program Statement: The SPN contributes to plant conservation by engaging public garden professionals, volunteers, and visitors in the detection and diagnosis of high-consequence pests and pathogens.
At APGA, we believe that Public Gardens are the place for people to experience and learn about our changing climate.
APGA offers the highest quality Professional Development symposia, exploring matters of direct interest to our members. Arranged to cover specific subjects in-depth for short periods of time, they are held throughout the United States and Canada in conjunction with APGA member institutions.
APGA has worked in partnership with the Association of Children's Museums, the American Association of Museums, and the Institute for Museum and Library Services to develop Let’s Move! Museums & Gardens. First Lady Michelle Obama announced Let’s Move! Museums & Gardens as part of her broader initiative to raise a healthier generation of kids.
The North American Plant Collections Consortium (NAPCC) is a network of botanical gardens and arboreta working to coordinate a continent-wide approach to plant germplasm preservation, and to promote high standards of plant collections management. NAPCC Collections may serve as reference collections for plant identification and cultivar registration. Collection holders make germplasm available for taxonomic studies, evaluation, breeding, and other research. Participating institutions compare holdings with others to identify duplications and gaps. This makes efficient use of available resources, strengthening collections through combined collaborative activities.
This broad agreement relates to the conservation and management of plant species and their habitats and ecosystems through cooperative efforts. It includes formal and informal conservation education programs for children and adults. It allows access to USFS lands and resources by APGA members, streamlining the collecting permit process for plant materials, and to work on other mutual training, development programs, and other conservation projects/strategies of mutual benefit to both parties.
The Public Garden--THE professional journal for public gardens. Each issue is filled with the latest trends and industry information. Available in print and on-line. APGA Member Gardens can choose to receive up to 25 copies of each issue to share with their board members and staff. Each month, APGA members receive the e-Newsletter. Each issue features information on all APGA programs, corporate member profiles, people and gardens, funding opportunities, and latest information from the Career Center. Members also receive discounted rates our APGA’s popular research studies including the Compensation and Benefits Survey.
As an APGA institutional member, you can post internships and employment opportunities on the APGA Career Center, 24 hours a day. Career Center postings are announced daily on Facebook and Twitter. National Public Gardens Day is a national day of celebration to raise awareness of America’s public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education in communities nationwide. All APGA Member Gardens are invited to participate.
The Deal of the Day for APGA Member Gardens! As a part of its strategic goal to raise the awareness of public gardens and drive visitation to its member gardens, the American Public Gardens Association has partnered with Groupon to support visitation and increase membership loyalty by offering an additional discount on Groupon's Deal of the Day. Groupon is an online marketing program that offers one deal each day in many major cities around the country.
Traveling Exhibits at a Discount for APGA Member Gardens Rent one (or more!) of four brand new traveling exhibits at a 10 percent discount (for APGA member gardens only). APGA receives many requests about how to find new exhibits that will attract more visitors and increase membership. This year, four APGA member gardens—Botanic Garden at Smith College, The North Carolina Arboretum, Morton Arboretum, and Longwood Gardens—have developed traveling exhibits and have agreed to offer an exclusive discount to APGA member gardens.
APGA Introduces the Return of the Better Homes and Gardens Subscription Program. As a part of its partnership with Better Homes and Gardens, the APGA announces a new benefit for garden members which will provide each with the ability to offer subscriptions to BHG magazine to new and renewing members. In addition, the benefit extends to all interested APGA individual members.

The Esri partnership is back and the process is easier than ever! As a part of a strategic goal to support collections management and plant conservation by our member gardens, the American Public Gardens Association has extended its partnership with Esri by renewing an agreement that provides APGA member gardens with low-cost GIS software packaged with books and free training as well as with free registration for their staff to theEsri International User Conference. The latter is a tremendous week-long professional development opportunity for garden curators and GIS specialists, attended by more than 10,000 GIS and conservation scientists from around the world.

In January, APGA announced an agreement with the Green Restaurant Association to offer a 10% discount, to APGA Gardens on certification for your restaurants, cafes, and catering services. We believe this partnership provides a great opportunity for you to model best practices to your visitors, and educate the public about the importance of sustainable practices.
