This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG), Operations Division. [Website: www.usbg.gov] The employee is primarily responsible for the overall operations, maintenance and repair of mechanical systems located throughout the USBG Conservatory and Production Facility. A unique capability to accomplish various tasks across several competencies is required, including air conditioning and refrigeration, boiler plant operations, pipefitting, and carpentry work.
The incumbent is responsible for repairing and installing heating and cooling systems that humidify, dehumidify, clean, filter, and circulate air. The systems used to condition the air throughout the USBG facilities include those with special requirements such as cool desert and oasis greenhouses. Specific duties include the installation, modification, repair, maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of low and medium pressure vessels and auxiliary equipment associated with pressure vessels. Pressure vessels include centrifugal pumps, fuel oil pumps, chemical injectors, natural gas modulating valves, heat exchangers, steam to hot water converters, vacuum and condensate equipment and pressure reducing stations.
Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots high and low pressure piping systems, including domestic water distribution systems; sewage systems; steam generation systems; tempered water systems; hydronic heating systems; fire sprinkler systems; drain, waste, and vent systems; irrigation systems; and fountain display systems.
Constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies wood and wood substitute structures such as building frames, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, counter tops, bookcases, etc. Installs interior partitions, flooring, panels, decorative trim, molding, etc.
In support of multiple departments within the USBG, the incumbent performs operational duties as assigned to include preparation for installation of exhibits and displays, special events, and facility wide functions.
