POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This leadership position is the Director for the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers.  The position also manages the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Departments Gardener Apprenticeship Program.  The Director position will report to the Golden Gate Park Superintendent. The Director is responsible for managing the operations, facilities, and staffs at two renowned botanical institutions that are San Francisco Recreation & Park Department properties located within Golden Gate Park:

  • San Francisco Botanical Garden: a 55-acre living museum containing documented collection of more than 7500 kinds of plants displayed in a series of geographic and specialty gardens that receives more than 250,000 visitors annually. The non-profit San Francisco Botanical Garden Society supports the San Francisco Botanical Garden.
  • Conservatory of Flowers: a 12,000 square-foot historic glass conservatory with six support greenhouses and a widely marketed program of changing exhibits. The non-profit San Francisco Parks Alliance supports the Conservatory of Flowers.

In managing both institutions, the Director participates in strategic planning, implements master plans, plans and directs capital improvement projects, develops earned income opportunities to augment public funding, and curates and cultivates internationally significant collections of plants. 

The Director manages a publicly-funded horticultural and facilities management staff of 43 full-time equivalents (FTE), 9 non-profit-funded FTE, oversees the activities of up to 20 interns, a flexible number of job-training participants, and approximately 80 volunteers. 

The Director has an additional key responsibility in managing the operational relationships with the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and San Francisco Parks Alliance in their support of their respective institutions.  This role requires extensive Board and Committee service as well as support of their respective efforts in fundraising, earned income, special events, educational programs, marketing and volunteer coordination. The operational relationship with these non-profit partners is outlined by their respective Memorandum of Understanding and Lease Management Agreements.

The Director administers an operating budget of approximately $2.3M in public funds as well as substantial operational and capital project funds held by the non-profit partners; participates in non-profit partner fundraising and development activities; serves as primary spokesperson for the Botanical Garden and Conservatory of Flowers by writing articles for popular and scientific publications, public speaking, and media engagement; plays a key role in planning and developing new and renovated gardens and interpretive exhibits; collaborates with non-profit partners to support and strengthen youth and adult educational programs focused on botanical, horticultural and environmental themes; manages ongoing maintenance and renovation of the institutions’ buildings and garden structures. 

 

Duties for the San Francisco Botanical Garden and the Conservatory of Flowers:

·  Manage day-to-day operations including supervision of staff, interns, and volunteers;

·  Administer and monitor expenditure of public and private funds with non-profit partner;

· Support non-profit partner fundraising programs;

·  Plan and direct public and private-funded capital improvement projects;

·  Communicate with the public and news media;

· Develop and manage earned-income opportunities;

·  Manage non-profit partner relationships, including Board and Committee service;

· Interact with the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society and San Francisco Parks Alliance Executive Directors per the respective Memorandum of Agreement;

·  Participate in strategic planning;

· Implement master-site plans;

·  Supervise program marketing and scheduling to maximize public participation;

·  Serve as an ex officio member of the San Francisco Botanical Garden Society Board of Trustees and the San Francisco Parks Alliance Board of Trustees;

·  Serve as the primary point of contact between the Recreation and Park Department and the non-profit partners;

·  Develop, market, and manage exhibits; and

·  Perform additional duties, as required.

 

Duties for the Gardener Apprenticeship Program

·         Manage the operations of the Department’s Gardener Apprenticeship Program comprising a staff of 25 FTE of apprentices and 1 apprenticeship coordinator.

·         Participate in regular Apprenticeship board meetings.

·         Oversight of the diversified training of the apprentices in the full range of skills required for success in the horticultural profession.  

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.      Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in horticulture, botany, landscape architecture or a related field; AND

2.      Requires at least five years of progressively responsible professional management and supervisory experience in a public garden or similar institution.

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

·         Master’s degree in horticulture or related field;

·         Proven track record of working with non-profits;

·         Demonstrated management and communication skills necessary to set goals, manage, lead and enroll employees and volunteers;

·         Comprehensive knowledge of best management practices in public garden administration, including management of public-private partnerships;

·         Comprehensive knowledge of temperate, Mediterranean, and subtropical horticulture and botany;

·         Knowledge of educational theory and interpretive-planning principles;

·         Knowledge of the principles and practices of capital-project management;

·         Knowledge of history, principles and practices of landscape architecture and environmental planning;

·         Highly developed ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to diverse audiences;

·         Ability to develop institutional-strategic and operations plans for public gardens; and

·         Knowledge of private and extramural public funding.
