HORTICULTURIST (GARDENER SUPERVISOR)

This position is located in the Collections Section under the Horticulture Division at the United States Botanic Garden (USBG). As supervisor of the Collections Section, the incumbent will be responsible for providing leadership in the development, maintenance, and selection of the USBGs living plant collections.

More specifically, the incumbent provides administrative and technical supervision necessary to accomplish day-to-day activities. Plans and coordinates work operations, establishes priorities and work sequences, makes work assignments, sets deadlines, obtains resources needed to accomplish timely completion of assigned projects. Provides technical guidance in accomplishing difficult tasks. Ensures that the staff is fully trained and comply with health and safety provisions.

Coordinates the production of a diverse assortment of temperate, tropical, and subtropical plants and display crops, in addition to rare and endangered plant species, and other plant materials. Assists with the development and maintenance of the living collection by propagating plants from seeds, pollen, cuttings and other methods.

Plans and develops permanent and seasonal plant collection displays and horticultural exhibits. Determines which cultivars and specimens to use in plant displays. Oversees the production schedules as they affect the coordination of design, content, and public programs.
