Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Sarasota, FL

www.selby.org

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a world leader in the display, study, and conservation of orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads, epiphytes and tropical plants with a focus on botany, horticulture and environmental education. The new Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden – and Selby Gardens as a whole – showcases the rich, vast knowledge of the Garden’s research enterprise and teaches visitors about the intricate web of connections between plants and people.

The Gardens are an urban, bayfront oasis of inspiration and education in Sarasota, Florida – one of America's most desirable places to live, work and raise a family.  Beyond its clean air, sparkling white sand beaches and sunny climate, Forbes named Sarasota one of the best places for business and careers and Money magazine recognized it as the nation's best small city. Selby Gardens has received many accolades including: One of America’s Top Ten Botanical Gardens by Country Living Gardner magazine; Arts Organization of the Year by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce; #1 Garden in Florida by Florida Monthly Magazine readers; and #1 of the Top Ten “Must Do’s in Sarasota” by Sarasota Magazine. Please visit www.selby.org for more information.

Selby Gardens is experiencing historic growth:  more than $4.2 million was raised to build the new Children's Rainforest Garden (which was completed on-time and under budget); attendance and membership revenue are exceeding ambitious goals; long-time and new philanthropic donors are giving consistently and at increased levels in support of the important family and education programs and other new organizational initiatives. To further this positive momentum, the Selby Gardens’ Board of Trustees seeks an inspirational Chief Executive Officer to provide visionary and strategic leadership for the organization’s mission and ensure the implementation of effective plans to support that mission.  This creative leader will build on the organization’s strong history of conservation, research, and environmental education and further the mission through the continual development of new strategies, community partners and allies.

The ideal CEO candidate will possess: a demonstrated success in providing organizational vision and implementing strategic plans; high-level management skills to effectively lead and direct the activities of the organization; track record in fundraising; excellent outreach and relationship building skills to retain and advance Selby Gardens’ favorable reputation in the community and beyond.  Specialization or familiarity with conservation, environmental education, and/or horticulture is preferred, but not required. Leadership experience in a destination- or visitor-based organization (e.g., museum, gardens, zoo) is strongly preferred.   Please refer to the position profile for more details on the required experience and desired qualities of the new CEO.

Selby Gardens has retained Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC to assist on this executive recruitment; visit FPS’ website (www.glfreeman.com) for more information and to download the position profile.  Please send confidential inquiries directly to FPS via e-mail:  Selby@glfreeman.com. EOE.  To be fully considered, applications must include: (1) an up-to-date resume; (2) a formal letter of interest, and (3) a list of references.  Additional materials and information will be requested during the search and interview process.
