Leach Botanical Garden is a horticultural treasure on seventeen acres, featuring Oregon native plants and the historic Leach collection of more than 2,000 plant species. The mission of Leach is to maintain and enhance the living collections of plants for the purposes of education, research and conservation and to preserve the legacy of the Garden’s founders, botanist Lila and her pharmacist husband John Leach.

Location: Leach botanical Garden at 122nd Ave. The garden is located in outer SE Portland and accessible by bike on the Spring Water Corridor and public transportation. The garden is about 25 minutes from downtown.

Status:  Horticulture Internship

Duration: 10 - 12 weeks, starting date, June 1, 2013 (flexible based on end of school term)

Compensation: $10.00 per hour, three days a week for a total of 24 hours/week.  Applicants are responsible for their own transportation.

Job Summary:
Hands-on internship working alongside our Horticulture staff and volunteers. The staff and interns will identify specific projects that the interns will work on during their internship.  Before completion of the internship, the interns are expected to report on their projects including recommendations and ideas resulting from the project.  As part of their experience, interns assist in all aspects of suitable horticultural practices (such as planting, propagating, pruning, labeling, weeding, mulching and irrigation); garden renovation and construction; inventory and collections recordkeeping, and public education. Educational field trips and seminars/lectures will round out the interns’ experience. The Hoyt Arboretum, The Japanese Garden, the Berry Seed Bank, The Chinese Garden and The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden are outstanding facilities and resources within easy driving distance from Leach. Upon completion of the internship, the interns are expected to write a report and do a presentation about their work and experience.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in college programs (including graduate programs) and have completed their sophomore year with a focus on Horticulture, Botany, Biology, Landscape Architecture, Soil Science or Environmental Science; minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. School credit may be available depending upon the university’s requirements.

Working Conditions:
This is a hands-on job, primarily outdoors. Applicants should be able to lift 50 pounds.
