Collections Management Internship (Plant Records)

Tudor Place Historic House and Garden

 
Tudor Place Historic House and Garden, a historic house museum in Georgetown, seeks an intern to assist with the creation of its digital living plant material inventory. The project will focus on creating catalog records for woody plant material (primarily trees) in our historic gardens on the Museum’s collection database, PastPerfect. This will include field work and digitizing photographic slides/prints of the historic garden for inclusion in the catalog. This internship opportunity is ideal for anyone interested in developing hands-on experience in cataloging, collections management and managing a historic horticultural collection.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Confirming field identification work
  • Entering plant material data into PastPerfect database
  • Photographing plant material and adding to database records
  • Assisting with the assessment of the overall condition of woody plant material and measuring their dimensions
  • Creating and attaching plant labels 
  • Gathering data on phenology and historic references related to planting
  • Accessioning woody plants and de-accessioning dead or discarded plants
 
Qualifications:
Applicants must currently be enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Horticulture Collections program, Horticulture program, Museum Studies program or related college level program.
 
Experience with museum databases, collections management procedure, and horticulture is desirable.
 
Schedule: 21 hours a week, 12 weeks (May – August, flexible)
 
Compensation: $1000
