Wanted: Assistant curator/curator for new botanical garden opening in 2015.
Gardens have been under construction for past 35 years.
Primary focus has been the grasses, especially bamboo with over 100 species and xeric plants (agave, cacti, yucca, sempervivum, delosperma, etc.) suitable for the mid-Atlantic. Currently developing a moss/woodland garden and a hardy "tropical" garden. Unique displays have been constructed, from an island water maze of over 50 islands suitable for boating to a man made "Mountain" with gardens and outlooks.
Our botanical garden is located in suburban Northern Virginia/Washington, D.C. on 150 acres.
3 years minimum experience in a Public Garden. A 4 year college degree or equivalent. Ability to manage others, prepare schedules, maintain records, use computers. Helpful to have some knowledge of irrigation and to speak Spanish. Flexibility and ability to adapt on the fly to changing weather conditions and organizational needs. Hands on assistance in maintaining gardens, as well as your ability to handle physical work, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working in the cold and the heat, as this job, requires both management skills as well as the physical ability to work with others on installation projects.
