The qualified individual is an integral part of the continuing development of the seven acre garden.  The Landscape Technician reports directly to the Garden Curator and is a member of the Garden Management Team.   Also works to maintain and preserve the vision and qualities of the garden.

Duties of this position are two-fold, relating to PJCBG garden site and to the nursery space.  They include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains cleanliness and upkeep throughout the display gardens, grounds and buildings
  • Works closely with Garden Staff, Administrative Staff, Volunteers and Students
  • Maintains the highest standards for existing and new displays including bed preparations, soil amendment, site clearing, weed management, plant installation and more
  • Implements the installation and maintenance of drainage, lighting, electrical, irrigation including systems and controls
  • Nursery Operations including care of greenhouses, boiler room, equipment and storage houses
  • Care and upkeep of nursery plants, through proper pruning, potting, watering and weeding, etc.
  • Maintains greenhouse heating and cooling systems
  • Use of and upkeep of landscape equipment and vehicles (e.g., small tractors, lawn-mowers, blowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, backpack sprayers, forklifts, tillers, etc.)
  • Application and calibration of fertilizers and pesticides
  • Lawn care including, irrigation, mowing, trimming and weed management
  • Performance of physical labor, including bending and lifting up to 50 pounds of weight
  • Work on limited occasions during evening and/or weekend hours as part of a regular 40-hours work week
  • Use of general computer software  programs, such as word documents, spreadsheets and databases

Minimum requirements include an Associate’s degree in horticulture and two year experience in garden and/or nursery maintenance.  Possess a North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s License with the Garden’s support for acquisition of credits.  Continuing education and enrichment activities in horticulture for this position will be supported by the Garden and will include, but not be limited to, travel for appearances at green industry trade shows, horticultural symposia and to visit various nurseries and gardens.  In general, this position requires a focused, plant enthusiastic individual who is self-directed, hard-working, possesses good communication skills and one who exhibits a professional and tidy appearance.  Must have the ability to work independently and pay close attention to detail.
