Vice President of Preservation

The Garden Conservancy

The Garden Conservancy was established in 1989 by Frank Cabot, distinguished American gardener and plantsman. In partnership with privately-owned gardens as well as public and private organizations, the Conservancy assists in developing master plans, structuring legal strategies and conservation easements to protect these resources, providing horticultural management and public access, and establishing sound fiscal and organizational sustainability for each property.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President of Preservation is a member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for furthering the Conservancy’s garden preservation mission. The position works closely with the Garden Projects Committee of the Board of Directors to identify, evaluate and select potential new gardens for Conservancy involvement and to provide guidance to and resources for strengthening existing gardens.

We seek a proven leader and manager who can demonstrate a successful career working in or closely with public gardens at the senior management level. Career experience in the fields of horticulture, landscape architecture, garden design or land conservation is required. This person would ideally understand the business of nonprofit organizations, particularly in the transition phase from private ownership to public or charitable status. This person will demonstrate a talent for facilitating both lay and professional groups toward successfully achieving project goals.

A master’s degree is preferred in such fields as horticulture, landscape architecture, ornamental plants, and public garden administration. Frequent domestic travel throughout the United States is required.
