Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

General Information:
A 50 acre waterfront estate near downtown Miami, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and public museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Vizcaya exemplifies the epoch in United States history known as the American Renaissance, when the nation’s wealthy industrialists built lavish estates inspired by the European Renaissance.  Our mission is to preserve Vizcaya and engage our community and its visitors in learning through the arts, history, and the environment.

Horticultural Internship:
The internship is a hands-on position designed to give the candidate experience in daily management of a large public garden, including sub-tropical horticulture practices and management of significant cultural landscapes.

The intern’s duties will include the following:

  • Assisting with accession records and labels for living collections
  • Historical research as necessary
  • Volunteer management and supervision for individuals and groups of volunteers working on specific projects.
  • Nursery management and plant tracking
  • Hands on horticulture practices
  • Regular management of several endangered subtropical forests
  • Maintenance and care of an intensively planted 1 acre indoor landscape
  • Container plant and display management, care, and enhancement
  • Orchid care and maintenance
  • Support additional Horticulture initiatives and projects as needed

Internship Structure and Candidate Requirements:
The internship is 40 hours per week between 9:30am and 5:30pm, with occasional evening and weekend hours as needed. The Intern may request earlier working hours if desired. Internships are between 3 and 6 months, with flexible start and end dates according to the needs of the successful candidate. Academic credit(s) may be awarded by your academic institution; consult with your institution.

Skills & Requirements:
The successful candidate will be a senior in or recent graduate of a bachelor’s or masters’ program in horticulture, public horticulture, landscape architecture, or related field. Candidates with or working toward an Associate’s degree will be considered with relevant experience or knowledge.

  • Fluent in English.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group or team.
  • Adhere to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Policies & Procedures.

The individual should be able to lift 40 pounds and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity and should have the ability to negotiate variable terrain, including stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

In addition to the required application materials a standard background check including drug/alcohol screening is required.

Salary and Benefits:
Interns enjoy free admission to Vizcaya and associated institutions, Vizcaya related events, and receive discounts at the café and shop.

The Internship is paid at a rate of $15.62 per hour. Housing and transportation are not provided and are the intern’s responsibility to secure. Foreign nationals who are not American citizens or lawful permanent residents of the US need a work visa and a work permit, officially known as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
Internships are not complemented with the benefits offered to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens/Miami-Dade County employees. There is no coverage for medical, dental, vision, legal or life insurance, and no retirement plan options. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
