The Holden Arboretum
The Holden Arboretum has an opportunity for an experienced Horticulturist to take responsibility for one of our six, themed gardens. Holden is one of the largest arboreta in the United States. Established in 1931, Holden currently manages over 3,600 acres in northeast Ohio, with 3,000 acres of natural areas and 600 acres of horticultural collections and displays, with more than 16,000 documented plants and plant groupings comprised of over 1900 species. www.holdenarb.org
The Horticulturist will: use sound horticultural principles to maintain beautiful, sustainable landscapes and ensure plants are grown and cared for under optimal; participate in short and long range planning activities guided by Holden's strategic objectives; and assist in the setting of goals to accomplish those objectives. In addition, this person will take initiative for: record-keeping; developing improvements for themed gardens that maintain their design integrity; planning and scheduling garden tasks; leading and instructing seasonal workers and volunteers; leading garden tours; and performing other tasks as may be required.
Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in garden management and/or professional horticulture utilizing sustainable techniques, and be able to identify and treat pests and plant diseases. A strong knowledge of woody and herbaceous plants is expected with an emphasis on rhododendrons and shade gardens preferred. A Bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany, or similar degree is preferred and a valid driver's license with an approved driving record is required.
